Default original rear oil seal

Apparently there is a slight difference in an original rear oil seal and a reproduction, how can you tell the difference? Thanks to anyone who can help me.

thank you for the input. I read in one of the threads on fordbarn that to get a better oil seal with a Burts seal it is best to use an original rear oil seal. I dont know if the one i have in my engine is a repro or original. Any thoughts?

When you say "Burts seal" I guess you mean the ENGINE rear seal, and not a rear axle seal.

Original is an oil slinger, and not a seal as such. Some people cut off the slinger and try to improve on the original design. I like original.

yes it is the engine rear seal and the crankshaft has had the sliger machined off also the engine has been rebabbitted and the crank turned to fit. I am going to try to put it back as it was modified wit the nitrite type seal. Just trying to figure out weather the rear engine seal is original or reproduction, Thank You

The groove in an original is identical to the groove in the rear main cap.
The groove in a reproduction is different, and does not match the groove in the rear main cap.
Seals are nitrile.

There is a member here on the barn who replaces the slinger on an A crank shaft but I can't remember who. I know I'll have a palm on forehead moment when we find out. I suggest replacing the slinger rather than trying to re invent the wheel and using one of those nitrile seals

Putting the slinger back on is best left to the ones who know how. You cannot get the rear main to seal without replacing it if you just replace the aluminum seal and do away with the nitrile seal. I only know of 2 here that replace the slinger, me and Rich at Antique Engine Rebuilding.

I have been told that model A to 1948 use a slinger for the rear main. My question is there a way ( a seal ) to stop the oil that comes from the rear main when the engin is shut off. That is what the cotter pin at the bottom rear of oil pan.

Many reasons. Lack of gasket covering rear of camshaft. Plugged / missing tube on the rear main. Poor oil pan gasket sealing, etc.

I have 24,000 miles on AER engine with original seal system and very litle leakage. Several club members have had to return rebuilt engines with One piece seals to be repaired.

thanks John for those words, I am on the fence about which way to go. For me, I would have to get the slinger replaced on my crankshaft, probably by dreamwerks because of the geographic location. does anyone know how much time does it take to get it back?
