Default One piece driveshaft - '38 Ford?

Hi folks,

Converting my '38 to open drive as going the 5-speed route. Just pulled my torque-tube forward expecting to find a coupler to split it from the pinion, but have found this...

...no coupler and a one-piece shaft. I've seen these on Model A's but not V8s before. Anyone else come across this?

Would a Mercury axle fit a 38? Or would the Mercury driveshaft be too long and must have been shortened somewhere?

Or, 3.78. Got one in my garage, waiting.
Out of a 1947 or 1948 Merc.

My 40 Merc was like that, 2.78 gear. In excellent condition and free to who would need
or want it along with the torque tube, clutch, flywheel and pressure plate.

These are pictures of "jayvee34" one-piece '40 Merc driveshaft/pinion gear from some time ago. DD

It looks like a beefier model A one.
I wonder what the thinking was behind it, maybe to eliminate the coupling, for what reason?

Also installed in '41 Ford 6 cyl passenger cars.
From. memory, a 3:62 or 3:68 ratio. To verify, check the Green book.
