What about the youngest as well would be interesting to know. Not to make y'all feel older.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Got up Sunday morning feeling like I could still do it all. 76 is only a number so they say. Shoveled the damn snow for at least 4 hours and came in wimpering to my honey! Sympathy helps. Hands hurt like hell! Fell asleep in my chair for an hour, woke up and took an ibuprofen and went to bed. Monday morning the sun came out and I am feeling like I can do it all again. So many of my old buddies are feeling no pain anymore so I feel blessed even when hurting a bit.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
I'm 67. I bought my first old ford when I was 19. It was a '28 AA stakebed. That means it was 1972 and the truck was 44 years old. I had my wife get on her phone calculator and we think that would be the same as buying and driving a 1977 ford pickup today. I'd still take the AA thanks.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Although never a FordBarn member, my dad had you guys beat. When he was 95 his '40 2 dr. sedan cracked an exhaust manifold and sounded terrible So I found one on ebay and had it shipped to him. When I went to visit him later that year, he had the engine out. He had broken a manifold bolt and couldn't get at it to drill it out so he just pulled the engine to get at it. I showed up in time to help finish reinstalling (there wasn't much left to do). A steady rod was also broken so he tossed it on his welding table, pulled out the welder cables and sewed it back together. His favorite trick was to lay a bolt along side the break for reinforcement. He could still lay a good bead at 95!
His first car was a '28 Chevy and he bought the '40 in 1940 as as 6 month old repo. |

I like this forum, because I love old Fords but, it also one of the few places makes me feel young at 76.

Man! I didn't realize I was hanging out with a bunch of old guys. I'm a lot younger (25) but, unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I have 50 years of experience at being 25. My wife says I can't stay 25 because we have a 22 year old granddaughter. I just say "that's her problem".

I'll be 78 in a few weeks and thankful I've made it this far.
The toughest part for me is getting up and down while working on these old cars. Can't be without one though. |

I’m 62. Bought my first Ford V8 about ten years ago and fell in love with that little motor. I thought the end was near for me working on project vehicles but, you guys still working on stuff in your eighties absolutely gives me hope that I may get mine done!!..... Thanks,...Mark

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
I am 82 and still coming in from my heated shop every day with greasy hands. My first car was a 39 Plymouth coupe that I dated my wife of 62 years. I still remember how nice those shifts into 3rd gear were! Then a 50 Ford and Fords ever since. She is always telling me to stop trying to act when we were in our younger years.

I'm 77 and grew up in a cloudmist 40 4dr that my dad bought new. It was the first car I drove at age 15. It was in our family until 1961. I now have one just like it and drive it often as weather permits. My first car was a 51 Ford convert.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Now I feel left out. I posted my age (76) on the 2nd page, I think but, not my first car.
It was my best friends car, I got it in '59 at 15, when he got a 50 Ford. It was a '48 Merc, coupe. Tuck and Roll, interior, '39 trans and a 3/16 over engine, No cam or carburation though.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Ok, frnkeore, me too. My first car was a 30 Model A coupe. I was like 12 or 13. No floor boards and no exhaust pipe. The carb leaked and it would blow a ball of flame under your feet ever so often! Loved that car, would drive it around in a field next to our house! Next was a 41 Chevy and then a 33 Ply coupe. The good old days!!

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
BobNH just reminded me that my first old Ford was a 1940 pickup we summer kids found after going to the Skowhegan Fair in Maine one warm evening. Paid $75 scrounged up from all the kids and 'dusted' it back home. My father gave me hell for driving with no plates or insurance....but I think he liked the truck. It got sold 2 years later😞. I’m still 74.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
I'm 82, At 14 I sold my bike and bought a Model A for fifteen dollars. Then later that year I bought a 37 Ford coupe without an engine for seven dollars and fifty cents and then I built my first flathead engine.
Now about twenty or thirty flatheads later I'm putting Lincoln brakes on my 36 pickup. It takes a lot longer now. Bill |

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
I appreciate all the fellows here that maybe up there but still doing their thing and sharing.
I'm also a young pup considering the ages given. 75% of the time I rather talk to you guys. I grew up in a bit of it, so it puts me back a little more. I'm getting closer everyday. I'm stuck between the baby boomers and the millennials. They share more then either care to admit. I'm a GenXer. Punk Rock and questions. Nixon baby. Questions for you older guys that share. Thank you for that! Maybe even some younger folks too. Last edited by Tinker; 02-25-2021 at 01:58 AM. |

I'll be 73 this year. Went to my high school graduation in a 37, two door slant back which I paid $350. It was extremely nice, bone stock with original paint & interior. It definitely taught me how to drive defensively with those mechanical brakes. I truly enjoy checking the forum daily. Thanks to everyone.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
i will be 70 tomorrow the 26th. went from ridin and wrenching on harleys to do the same with a 37 model 78 fordor that i got late spring 2020. i am third owner. last older gent was 85 and had since 1956.i put turn sigs. and seat belts in front with our son. last summer limped home with leaking carb and ordered and installed a new one from dennis carpenter. new coil and condenser. whats funny is i gave up changing the oil in other family cars and said id never crawl under the cars any more. ive had that 37 jacked up and hood sides removed more than i can count. its been fun but man its a bugger to get off your back like a coupla other barners have said. hearing from the older than me barners inspires me also. thanks guys keep on wrenchin. tom.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Kube, I just put you at 73 as my head hurt figuring coded ages. This may be wrong but be not offended as your knowledge puts you past 100. Here's the numbers so far.
89 x2 88 x1 87 x3 86 x3 85 x2 84 x4 83 x5 82 x5 80 x1 79 x3 78 x5 77 x7 76 x8 75 x4 74 x5 73 x11 72 x5 71 x2 70 x5 69 x1 68 x1 67 x1 65 x4 63 x2 62 x2 61 x1 60 x2 55 x1 54 x1 50 x1 32 x1 7381 divided by 99 ppl = 74.5yr old average To date as of post #120 Current oldest member: 89 Average member age: 74 Don't forget, age is only a number. Its all about your state of mind, until the body speaks up louder.

I’m 81 and still work in the garage just about every day. Been restoring cars for 50 years and my daughters say it keeps me young. Life would be awful boring without old fords....amen

I'll help bump the average back up. 81 plus and my first car was a '32 Ford (surprise, surprise) Model B standard coupe for $50. It was comparable to the one on another recent thread herein, only in more conventional colors.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Well guess I will add a bit to the lower area I'm 68. My first car was actually a truck 1950 F-1 panel V-8 of course cost me 25 dollars. The truck is long gone but I still have that flathead V-8 . Gonna put it in my 32 pickup one day.

Getting close to 85 and feel very lucky to have made it this far. There have been times when I shouldn't have ! 1st car 32 Deluxe Tudor driven home with No plates, no battery and not old enough for a license ! Great memories. kerk

62 next month. This thread reminds me of when I was a small town Iowa Ford dealer. Our newspaper editor got all the Vets in town to come for a group picture (then did a
nice write up on each of us). Lots of WWII and Korean era folks. Guy in the back yells to me "Kelley, you're the youngest one here!". My answer was "and doesn't that make this a sorry a## outfit !" They laughed. Great people. I've had 13 early V8's since 1973. |

I'm 74 and a couple of years older than my '48 Super Deluxe Tudor. It's not flathead powered, but an Olds with a Muncie 4-speed. I've been around flatheads all my life, tho having learned to drive in dad's '51 F1 and drove my grandad's '52 F3 quite a bit. I thought that ole 4-speed was fun, but my granny didn't like it at all. She could barely drive it! It was their only vehicle for years.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Well I see we need someone who is 57 so I'll volunteer...working on cars since I was a kid, first my Dad's then mine. I grew up with my Dad's MGA's, TR3's and such in the driveway. He still comes for lunch every weekend to help and see my progress on the '49 F-47, you could add him as an associate member at 84 if you like. Having a flathead is like having 8 lawn mowers on the same crankshaft...I love it.
Cheers

79 today, first flathead was a 1950 ford four door V8 in high school. Oldest 1936 5 window coupe with Mercury V8. Only flathead left is a 1950 F1 with an original 226h assembled at the Henry Ford plant in Long Beach, Calif.

Add another for 81. Age does make things more difficult and time consuming but, I can cope with that. My big problem now is the propensity to loose my tools while I am working.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Not the oldest but close!! 86 last month and I have 2 A's, a '32, a '33, a '34 a '48 a '54 all Fords. Also a '55 BellAire Hard top and a '58 Corvette. Also a token '36 Dodge sedan and they all run, but not much. The '48 is an F-1 that has been in the works for 12 years. I don't suppose anyone has an idea on how to contact Ian Roussel, the car builder?? He isn't too far from where I live and it would be great to have him help finish it. Probably only a dream but it's worth a try.

From what I've read, I'm claiming the title at 89 years old. LOL

Lawson I hope you make 100 and even more. Maybe playing with the old Junkers as my dad use to call my old cars. But he always use to smile when driving my Junkers. So that stuck when talking about my old rusty pile of junk my wife use to say. Always in fun. Do enjoy life and have fun with the Antique cars. God Bless you.

Not so fast, Lawson! You just MIGHT be the oldest "ol' COOT" here....or....you just MIGHT not be! YOU claim to be 89. "G.M." claims (back in post #77) that he is also 89. When we have TWO old coots BOTH claiming to be the oldest.....well, one of ya just AIN'T! It's all gonna depend on the earliest birthday, guys. And Lawson.....I notice that you haven't made any mention of your birthday, but through a little sleuthing, it looks like your birthday is probably December 27th (of 1931 ? ). NOW it gets interesting! "G.M." HAS posted his birthday on his PROFILE page. In part, it reads: Mini Statistics Date of Birth May 13, 1933 (87) Join Date 05-07-2010 Total Posts 4,425 SO.....We have one of two things here. Either George (G.M.) ain't worth a crap at basic mathematics, or.......he tells the truth four or five DIFFERENT ways! If George IS 89 right now, he would have to have been born in 1931. So Lawson, if it turns-out that "G.M." actually WAS born in 1933, and IF it is true that YOU actually were born in 1931, then it looks like you probably are the eldest ol' COOT here on the "Early V8" side of the 'Barn. But it sure would be interesting to hear back from "G.M." so that he could comment on his methods for doing math. DD .......... |

I'm TRULY sorry, for my insensitive wording (not)
What I was looking for is the average, on this forum, in hopes that this might be the only place that, at 76, I might be on the younger side of the members. I'm still just a kid at heart and need conformation because my body keeps telling something else

Not on here much but have enjoyed reading through this post. I just turned 58 and also just bought my first ever Ford this year. I have always been a chevy guy but always loved the 40 Ford Tudor and was able to aquire one this year from a local estate sale, I have to say it has been a good summer logging around 3K miles of trouble free fun on the old girl and looking forward to many more. Keep up the good work and it's nice having you experienced gentelmen around to keep us younger no it all guys in check.

Even tho I don't consider myself to be old, I seem to surround myself with old things, a '36 Ford, '37 GMC, '38 Girl Friend, and a '38 Buick. I do have a few newer play things, a '53 Olds and a '64 Chevy C-10.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Soon to be 76, but yesterday I got an early BD gift as my 37 pickup I've had since high school was published in the February issue of Hot Rod Magazine! My birthday is also in February. Oh so much work to do to get her on the road again.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Happy Birthday! I had asked "coup34" for a picture or two of this '34 5-window coupe that he has owned for 71 YEARS. Here's what he sent me. His dad had bought the car for his older brother returning from WWII. In 1946 or '47, brother bought a '40 Ford. Dad got the '34 back, but younger brother talked him out of it in 1950. That '34 is gorgeous, and will hopefully never be restore from the way she is right here. DD . Last edited by V8COOPMAN; 12-11-2021 at 02:39 PM. |

77 here and still playing with old Fords. Much cheaper than playing with women and they don't complain.

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
Side Bar to the '39 Plym conv cpe that Petehoovie posted..
The car shown in the #265 is one of the rarest P8 conv's listed in the POC, this is the only known example of a P8 w/dual spares. Documentation that came with the car showed that the dual spares were a special factory option. I had a special order right hand fender spare assembly for my Plym, decided not to use it, cluttered things up to much. Sold it to a man in Florida for a pocket full of money.

74 for me. My friend recently sent me a list of funny quips about aging, this is my favorite:

Re: WHO Is the Oldest Early V8 Forum Member?
The main thing we all are still above ground. And what a great bunch of friends to enjoy the Flatheads Fords on the forum. We ALL have our problems health and so on. This is what keeps us going on. Crawing around on the floor, up and down keeps our body limber. It does me to keep me limber. Also keeps our mind young. So I got a 18 year mind and a body of a 82 year old. Don't work to well but will half to do. So keep busy on the old Fords to stay young.
