brake shoe inspection
I've read all I can find on brake rebuilding, but haven't found any info on the
shoes, other than the pins need to be tight. I have a bucket of old shoes and most of the pin holes measure around .006" -.010". I installed a pair on the front and they seem to rock back and forth a lot at the center of shoe, but no noticeable up and down play. Not having any experience, I don't know if its time for new shoes or if the new ones are any better. I'm rebuild with new drums and original style part and want the best stop I can get. Any advice appreciated. |

Re: brake shoe inspection
Do you live within an area where there is a Model A Club? Contact the club and see if they can direct you to someone familiar w/'A' brakes for help.
You could also order new brakes w/shoes from a vendor such as Brattons or Snyders. New brake shoes are an inexpensive fix. |

Re: brake shoe inspection
I now see that Bratton's offers a new shoe.
I had talked to another vendor and they offered relined good original shoe. I tried to find out the pin hole diameter between a good shoe and a cull, but no luck. Thanks for the help. |

That's a great price, I might have to pick up a set or two just to have on hand. Just for comparison, Brattons sells one shoe for $31. |

Re: brake shoe inspection
I noticed after I posted I wasn't very clear on that.
The brake pin holes in the shoes I was planning on using are .006"-.010" out of round. Has anyone tried the 66$ shoes from ebay? Are they good quality? |

Re: brake shoe inspection
6 to 10 thou out of round , now that makes more sense how about clean up with reamer and go with oversize pins? such a thing available?

Re: brake shoe inspection
Even if you reamed the holes in the shoes, you would then have to ream the rollers and adjuster holes too. I think the rollers are hardened. If you could not fine the oversized pins, you would have to make your own (they may be hardened too?) and because of the head on the pin that holds the rollers is what rolls on the track.
By the way my OP is, that amount of wear is hardly anything. My check it to use a new pin to see how it fits, if not overly sloppy I use them.

Re: brake shoe inspection
I found an older post that mentioned that the pins should be tight in the shoes and not spin.

Re: brake shoe inspection
I bought a set, but they are not on the car yet. Need to get my drums to Randy Gross and back first...
