50 Ford question
Hello all,
Has anyone ever tried to replace the short rubber hose that connects the fuel filler pipe and the gas tank?? I spent the afternoon attempting to do so. First I removed the filler neck and cut old hose away {very rotten} and attempted to place the NEW rubber connecting hose (3 Inches long) on the tank. Very tight, so tight in fact that I heated the hose in hot water and later with a heat gun and I got it somewhat on the tank. Then I attempted to re install the filler pipe and after many attempts in lining it all up and getting the rubber to slide over the filler pipe , I gave up and came inside and had a beer and then another! Anyone else ever had to do this repair? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your reply.. Steve |

Re: 50 Ford question
You might try some liquid detergent.

Re: 50 Ford question
I just did this not long ago, don't remember any cool tricks except I used Vaseline and also dropped the tank straps so I could lower the tank a little. It was not an easy task.

Re: 50 Ford question
I did a l950 a few years ago. It was pretty easy as I remember. Got the hose from some old Ford suppliers? Maybe the hose you got was just too small!!!

Re: 50 Ford question
Thanks, One question? Did you use the entire 6 inch length of hose or did you cut it shorter. I cut mine to about three inches. Going to give it another try later this week. Thankks

Re: 50 Ford question
I just did one and had to drop the tank after suffering through what you described. It went right on after the tank was loose. I wish I had thought of using some vaseline. That would have made it even easier.

Re: 50 Ford question
I didn't cut mine, but it wasn't 6 inches long, either. Wherever I got it, it matched the old one. Edit to say I don't THINK it was 6 inches long

Re: 50 Ford question
Well I finally got the job complete. I did lower the tank, then placed a stretched hose ( used a soda bottle and warmed with a heat gun) on the filler pipe. Then placed Vaseline inside the other end and repositioned the tank and it all went together ok. Not easy but also not hard just frustrating. It did take two of us to complete the job. Thanks for all the help to those who replied. Steve
