I couldn't afford the Radial engine at the time, so I went VW powered with Belt Drive Reduction for the WWI Fokker Dr1 that I built. I have a Harley and a '36 Ford pickup with running Flathead and nothing sounds better than that (still wished I could have afforded the Radial engine though).

A radial to fit that DR1 kit would be pretty small. Warner engines were small but I don't know how well it would fit. I've seen that some later models have been developed but I don't know much about them.
A person can just mention the Pietenpol Air Camper or Sky Scout to get the discussion back on a Ford topic except it would be more toward Model Ts or Model As. The Funk brothers built an airplane but they are just as well known for their H6 and V8 conversions of the little Ford N type tractors. |

Tiger, Being very modest, I did not want to show off. There's more information that could be extrapolated from knowing the time, direction, airspeed, etc. of an incoming attack. Not only intercepts but air raid warnings, anti-aircraft defences (note the spelling), dispersal of aircraft on the ground, etc., ... time to target considerations as well as the likely targets. German fighters had very limited loiter over England and were very vulnerable as they exited as were the German bombers that were left behind them. Tagging and tracking their time in country, by color-coding the time of detection into 5 minute segments, certainly would be an advantage itself. Save me from myself ...

I have a Chipmunk with a Gypsie engine sitting in my hangar next to the 31 Widebed and 39 pickup. I believe the Heron, Dove and the two Rapide biplanes at DuxFORD also had the Gypsie Queen engines. ( cylinders on the single engine planes were pointed down so the Exalted Ruler could see over the nose).

Dad was a pilot for NWA, so we kids got to go many places on passes. The downside was that as a "non-rev," you had to be prepared to get bumped by a paying passenger. During his career, he flew the Boeing 247, 377, 727; Douglas DC-3, DC-4, DC-6. DC-7; Martin 202; and Lockheed 1049-G, L-188. To keep this Ford related, we had a 1940 Tudor Deluxe, and he told of once flying a plane with a Ford flathead engine that he remembered as being so seriously under-powered that he landed it as soon as possible.
