Rear brake drums
I am working on a Model A coupe with hydraulic brakes, I need 2 rear brake drums. Does anyone sell new brake drums with new hubs installed ready to go or have any good used ones ?
Thank you, Michael |

Re: Rear brake drums
Since Model A's did not have hydraulic brakes yours has been converted.
Usually 39-42 or 46-48 ford brakes are used. if you post Pictures of hub drum and backing plates it would help identify what you have. John |

Re: Rear brake drums
The drums are available for either the inside or the outside type rear hubs but I don't think they put them together due to the cost of a completed assembly. The hubs are expensive by themselves so this gives the customer a chance to use there old ones but you have to use the correct studs for the application that you have. A person also needs the swaging tool to reset them.

Re: Rear brake drums
Sorry to hear about the downgrade to hydrasulic brakes, because of the fact it has been modified ---even original model A backing plates and drums have been modified to hyd, though as has been mentioned most likely the later 39-41, or 42-48 backing plates were used, your wheel choice shopuld be mentioned because I don't think original wheels fir some of the later drums, and the ones that "fit" need adapter rings to fit A wheel properly

Re: Rear brake drums
And MT sells new hubs with the modern studs for their drums which are the best out there. Their drums install like modern ones and the studs don't have to be swaged in only pressed in, a very big advantage IMHO. Be assured that hydraulic brakes can be adjusted to work as well as mechanicals.

Re: Rear brake drums
Speedway sells some great drums. Outside type only. Use Dorman 610-109 studs with them. They press in and fit the drums. You will need back up rings. Contact me. $40 for a set.

Re: Rear brake drums
Don't forget that '35 Ford rear drums are for wire wheels and 1 3/4" wide, ideal for many hydraulic options. No adapter rings needed. The '35 fronts are a bit more complex fit. I love that simplicity. Seems like the hydraulic fear has spread beyond reason where the use of modified brakes is told with a qualified apology. Go figure. Good Luck: Fred A

Re: Rear brake drums
Like John said, '42 brakes like the '39s etc. are not self centering like the post-war. It makes a difference. May help if we try to be as accurate as we can when part ID is concerned. Good Luck: Fred A

Re: Rear brake drums
Real asbestos linings have worked better for me in some dramatic ways. My tempest got organic lining that showed how poor the brakes really were. Got NOS asbestos on E... and the improvement was obvious. Good Luck: Fred A
