Default Clutch Wear

When a clutch facing wears, does the pedal free play diminish? The '40 sedan I acquired had 0 pedal free play. Set it at about 1 1/4" then noticed clutch engaged immediately leaving the floor. Didn't like that so reduced free play to 1/2" and clutch starts engaging 1/2" off the floor. Probably not much more life left but should I have done anything different?

As the disc wears you loose free play. You should be fine with 1/2". Be sure to check linkage rods for worn pins, rod ends etc. Also when going down the road check to see if you still have some free play. Some times at higher rpm long style clutches have less free play when reved up.

It's best to know (measure) the throw-out bearing to pressure plate finger clearance, which should be close to a 10th (.1") of an inch. This should result in a pedal free-play of an inch or so.

Check the clutch equalizer shaft.this goes from the clutch pedal linkage to the bell housing.
Mine had a crack in it that would cause a strange clutch release operation. also check the bushings
