Default shutoff valve who has taken one apart could help me

30 t sed / i did risk chance and completly removed valve because of loose
little handle even though it did hold gas back. took off small nut to remove
handle then larger nut, does the valve inside come out too? mine does not want to. behind large nut there was no packing ?? want to install new
packing (on order} where does it go?

bought car in 1970 and sat until now . can not believe gas tank looks
so clean ,looking into it with a light.

behind the gland (packing) nut is a small washer. The packing is behind that. Once you have them out, the valve comes out. Sometimes it sticks a bit. I replace the handle and its retainer nut after removing the packing to twist and pull the valve.

What is wrong with it?

First look in the holes and rotate the valve. You should not see any real scoring. Some will be obvious that they may leak just by the scratches. Some are obviously very nice and good fitting.

If it tests ok leave it alone. Put light air pressure on each side and check for bubbles in a bucket of water. Should seal tight on each side and not bubble out the shaft. You have to rig some plumbing, but a pretty easy job.

I tested a pile of them and found a couple that looked nice and did not bubble with a slight tightening of the packing.

Getting the valve out with the packing does not always go so easy. Sometimes it is best to pick your battles.

when i blow through with my compressor it seems not to pass through
when valve closed but was only concerned because valve lever
feels too easy to move.

Fred if it shuts off without leaking don't take it apart as Kevin said.

How is the handle loose? Try snugging the nut a little but be careful you can snap off the brass threaded stud. Is the handle slotted hole or brass stud damaged?

no handle fits tight to slot // just lever moves quite freely not much
resistance when turned to off or on.

do you know about filter to valve, some talk about . where do you
get the part.

thanks for reply

Under the small nut, place a lock washer if the handle feels loose. But like others have said, don't over tighten!

Bert's, Bratton's, Snyder's and many other parts houses sell the small filter that slips into the hole on the top of your valve.
