behind the gland (packing) nut is a small washer. The packing is behind that. Once you have them out, the valve comes out. Sometimes it sticks a bit. I replace the handle and its retainer nut after removing the packing to twist and pull the valve.

What is wrong with it?
First look in the holes and rotate the valve. You should not see any real scoring. Some will be obvious that they may leak just by the scratches. Some are obviously very nice and good fitting. If it tests ok leave it alone. Put light air pressure on each side and check for bubbles in a bucket of water. Should seal tight on each side and not bubble out the shaft. You have to rig some plumbing, but a pretty easy job. I tested a pile of them and found a couple that looked nice and did not bubble with a slight tightening of the packing. Getting the valve out with the packing does not always go so easy. Sometimes it is best to pick your battles. |

Fred if it shuts off without leaking don't take it apart as Kevin said.
How is the handle loose? Try snugging the nut a little but be careful you can snap off the brass threaded stud. Is the handle slotted hole or brass stud damaged? |

Under the small nut, place a lock washer if the handle feels loose. But like others have said, don't over tighten!

Bert's, Bratton's, Snyder's and many other parts houses sell the small filter that slips into the hole on the top of your valve.
