Model AA engine question
I recently have bought (2) Model AA chassis. My research has found they have engines that were made 11/17/30 and 3/3/31. But nether one on them have The AA before the engine stamp, just the A. Does this mean they are not the correct AA motor that belongs in them? I have a lot to learn about my truck & any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Re: Model AA engine question
The engines were the same between the A and the AA. The engine/transmission assembly was stamped AA to indicate it (the assemble) had a 4 speed.

Re: Model AA engine question
So is there another number that would indicate it one of these is a true AA and the one I should be rebuilding my AA dumptruck as?

Re: Model AA engine question
The number stamped in the frame would be the engine number
the truck left the factory with. The link will show were the frame number is located. http://aafords.com/aa-information/ Bob Last edited by Bob C; 05-18-2015 at 03:56 PM. |

Re: Model AA engine question
Thank all of you for your help. Unfortunately, the only unaltered AA frame I have no longer has a readable number. My research tells me it is a true hand crank 31 Model AA frame. My project is in very rough shape (at this point)and I want to rebuild my truck be authentic. So I am trying to determine which drive train is an original drivetrain and restore my dumptruck as that vintage.

The engine could have had an “A” (Fig. 5) or “AA” (Fig. 4) associated with the number and the engine itself. An “A” usually meant that the engine was for a car or a light commercial vehicle. The “AA” usually meant that the engine was associated with the heavy duty trucks. This concept remained the same throughout the production of the Model A/AA Ford except from starting with engine number A26268, a February 16, 1928 engine, the “AA” prefix was dropped due to the fact that all truck clutch springs were the same weight as the car and commercial vehicles. On May 15, 1928, the Indianapolis Ford Service Letter indicated that all the truck engines were now being equipped with a 455 pound spring and that the engine numbers on such motors were being prefixed with the letters “AA” again. The cars and commercial vehicles retained the 420 pound clutch spring and the prefix “A”. These heavier truck clutch springs were painted “red” to distinguish between the two. Not sure of the engine number that this change occurred with. Pluck |

Re: Model AA engine question
Again, thank you all for your help. It kinda sounds like my project is a mess. The AA dumptruck is 31 chasis (with an unreadable frame number) and the engines I have are single A (1930 & 1931). What I am getting is I need to find a authentic (AA stamped) engine. Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: Model AA engine question
Bert's in Denver likely has a good AA stamped block. Lots of blocks have been restamped over the years. An original stamp will be on a natural rough cast surface, not a smooth surface. The A block and the AA block are identical, except for the number stamp having an added "A".

Re: Model AA engine question
Thanks a bunch. Hopefully I can find a correct block and salvage my restoration project.

Re: Model AA engine question
Hey Tom, Thanks for the Bert's lead. I called but they didn't have any usable AA blocks.

Re: Model AA engine question
I went through a kind of similar situation about 10 years ago (except for it was a doodlebug I was trying to keep as original as possible built out of a 30 AA). I would get in touch with the Ford Model AA Truck Club and ask them for help in locating something. Here is the link: http://fmaatc.org/

Re: Model AA engine question
There's a model A store similar to Berts down in AZ. I'll have to find the info though. Maybe someone else here knows where i'm talking about.
