Default Sunday Drive Out ........

Thought I would go for a nce little bimble in the coupe, sun is shining and I have recently rebuilt my steering and was keen to see how it drives now.

New steering is lovely - car was running really nice 1st time since I have owned it I was feeling really rather chipper !

Got about a mile down the road, doing about 25mph and bang the rear end starts banging and the whole car started shaking about.

Checked all the obvious things, put my hazard lights on and limped it home in 1st gear.

Stripped the rear end off and I find a tooth has snapped off the pinion and got wedged in the ring gear - "Cosmic"

Couple of pictures below - Any suggestions as to what would cause this to happen ?

Also see if you can make out the rusty areas - the whole bottom end of carrier axle case and passenger side axle are corroded - looks like it had been sat outside for a very long time.

You can see the broken bit wedged in the ring gear

I am wondering if the loose bearings from the broken race jumped up into the rear end maybe

Rusty shaft.

I would say rust on the bearings led to them being destroyed, then the loosenss led to the pinion failure. Now is a good time to go with a 3.54 or a 3.27 ring and pinion.

Well, on the good side, when she cut loose, at least it did not damage anything else.

The rear end should be very quiet and have a smooth feel. Any noise or roughness will definately push it to the top of things to do VERY quickly. Hopefully some bearings and ring and pinion will have you back on the road. I use round toilet brush on a long wood stick to clean the housings.

Tom Endy has posted about how to repair rear ends on here and a search should find them for you.
