saving my speed o
I took apart the speed o on my 47 coupe all the guts look pretty clean, but where the speed o cable hooks into the back is pretty crusty. Do you guys think it's fixable?

Re: saving my speed o
It shouldn't be a problem. Clean it up and lube the shaft and gears with light oil. If it isn't stuck it should be okay.

Also check the turtle gear at the transmission... when I had my trans rebuilt last Nov, I replaced the cable & turtle gear (worn,chipped)... It works perfect now! ....

Re: saving my speed o
I use a cordless drill slowly in reverse with a square drive bit(the size that fits in the cable opening)

Re: saving my speed o
The cable itself pushes into the shaft, the nut on the cable housing threads into the speedometer body.

Re: saving my speed o
No cable connected. You will see the square opening for the cable end.First carefully try to free it up with a small flat screwdriver tip using some 3 in 1 oil or equivalent.I do it on the bench

Re: saving my speed o
be very careful about touching the odometer wheels, the old silkscreen flakes off quite easy

Re: saving my speed o
I wonder if soaking that end in vinegar will help speed things along

Re: saving my speed o
I use Gumout carb. cleaner with the straw in the nozzle and spray into the square end to clean out what appears to be grease and crud from the pictures, also make sure the spring is not broken on the shaft where the speedo needle attaches, picture shows something around that area. But that may not free up the movement, the inner gears may need also cleaned and lubricated if it is stuck.

Re: saving my speed o
It didn't look like there was to much iron in there, probably should take it out now

Re: saving my speed o
Here is a 47 I just finished cleaning and lubricating, the speedometer by the way is a King Seeley. I show the gears out and there is a lubricating hole at the top, take out the plug and wick and lube it there too.

Re: saving my speed o
You will probably find the last cable end broken-off in the hole. Once it is cleaned and lubricated you can spin the input shaft with your fingers and the needle will move.

Re: saving my speed o
If I may add to your thread with a similar issue. I have a 51 Ford Custom. Speedo quit working. I bought new cable, housing, and gear from Dennis Carpenter. Installed, still not working. I removed cable end at speedo and it is turning. I removed speedo. Cut end of old speedo cable off and inserted into drill. Tested, and speedo worked great. I feel the problem is the cable tip is not extending far enough into speedo to engage properly. Trying to avoid the rebuild if not necessary. Any suggestions appreciated.
