Default How much is this 49 Ford worth?

Hello everyone,
I'm new to this forum and I'm new to these cars. I've always liked cars like this from when I saw the movie "Cobra" years ago, but my automotive knowledge lies with modern cars.
I ran accross this 49 Ford locally parked in someones yard. I decided to stop and talk to the owner to see if he was interested in selling. Here is what I know.

It's a 49 Ford with a 5.0 302 from an 86 Mustang, it is carbureted however. It has a C4 transmission and it runs and drives. The top has been chopped 4 inches. It has disc brakes on the front (drums still in the back). The door handles have been shaved so it has keyless entry. It has electric locks and windows. It also his heat and A/C. It has the original seats.
The body is straight, but it needs some work, sanding and a paint job. I found just a small mount of rust on the inner fender well. It needs quiet a bit of work, but it seems to be a solid foundation with the biggest obstacles out of the way.

I have no idea what these cars are worth. The guy said he would take $6,500.

Thanks in advance for any and all info!

It's worth what ever you feel comfortable paying. There's a lot of work done. But was it done right? A chop can look good on the surface. But you get to sanding and find out. There is a ton of Bondo on the car. To me the modern down grades make it worth less.

After you buy it, think of how much you might have to spend to get it the way you want. THings add up fast.

Looks fairly good to me, but your asking folks that mainly deal with stock/restored or mildly modified early Fords! The HAMB guys might have a better idea on what modified/customs are worth.

The grill looks like it's from a 1947 Oldsmobile. Did I just say that?

Customs/Kustoms are distinctive..personal taste prevail.
At that price, the buyer would be getting a deal.
HAMB will give you serious, and realistic values for that car.

HAMB consensus seems to be that it's a good deal.

Grab it and run... for that price you can fix whatever really bugs you later! You mention multiple things that cost >1k each... take her for a test spin, if you like it just keep heading towards home!

Be sure it has a valid current title. That price is not far out of line if it runs and drives The market for mod cars is pretty good, even for sloppy workmanship. Certainly better than the market for fully restored specimens. The price guides show a #5 car. rough but can be made driveable, at about $2,500. A #4 car that is driveable, but an amateur restoration, is about $3,500, so the price you were quoted is on the high side. If it doesn't have title and plates, it is probably a "parts car".

Boy! This is a tough crowd! $650? Parts car? (even with no title) seem harsh to me. I think the OP is better off with advice on the H.A.M.B.

The original post said $6500, not $650. If you don't have a valid title, obtaining one can be a real hassle, depending upon jurisdiction. A heavily modified car makes the process even tougher. I once bought a car from a seller who swore he had the title "somewhere". When he couldn't produce it, I started a search and found he had pledged the car to five different lenders, none of whom had been paid. I did eventually obtain a clear title, but the time and money taken was considerable. On modifed cars, the DMV in our area requires an inspection, and may include an appraisal if the claimed price raises questions. They will not accept a "title mill" document, in any case.

There was a post saying there was one too many zeros in the price. Somehow, it has mysteriously disappeared! And Supereal you are right about the jurisdiction making a difference if you don't have a title. However it seems that unless there is something really shady going on with the car, a dedicated person can usually win out, especially if dealing with a complete car rather than a pile of parts. I just did it in Minnesota. It also sounds like he is dealing with the builder, so that's a good sign.

If you're new to the HAMB I hope you posted an intro or you might get a somewhat hostile initial reception. FWIW.

Olds Grill or maybe a 46 Chevy
Fake spots. Skirts in the trunk. Frenched headlights and sunken anttena. Interior looks to be done in a nice pleated pattern.
Hard to say about the chop via the pics .
If the drive train runs well and you don't mind the mechanical up grades this is a good deal in my book.
Chops are running upwards of a $1000 per inch from some pro's. And has been stated many of the other things you mentioned are $1000 an item. .You couldn't build this car right now for that price unless you did it all yourself and even then......
JMHO .
Torchie.

From the posted photos, the car is worth the asking price. Being able to look the car over in person and hearing it run and driving it, is another can of worms. Be very sure that the title is clear and matches the car. Make sure there is a history of all the changes done to the car.
