I prefer to let the machinist start the conversation to get a sense of his attitude and approach to the work. This has saved me the bother of asking a lot of questions if the initial commentary reveals that I am better of thanking him and taking away my piece before he has a chance to do a lot of expensive buggery. I have learned from bad experience to pay attention to the little things that can add up to a lot of regret later on.
