59A-B flywheel
Does anyone know if I can use a 34 flywheel & PP & clutch in a 1947 truck 59A-B?
Catalogs say they are the same. Thanks B-O-B |

Re: 59A-B flywheel
You can use a lot of things, but not a good idea. '34s still used the antique 9" Model A style clutch and toooooo heavy flywheel. Stick with your catalogue and see how it works. I've gone the other way and found it worked well re drilling the 10" 59A flywheel for a 9"Long style plate. Where'd that B come from? Good Luck: Fred A

Re: 59A-B flywheel
I'm not sure about the 34 wheel. But, these eaekt wheels were used in stock cars by cutting off the shoulder and beefing up the 9"' clutch. This removed about 10 lbs from the wheel. with a lighter pressure plate. Indiana Clutch makes a nice 9" PP

Re: 59A-B flywheel
OK OL' I am going to put a new clutch and pressure plate and reface the flywheel on my 32. I got clutch chatter when taken off. Not so much backing up. What would do to solve the problem?

Re: 59A-B flywheel
I had this flywheel resurfaced not too long ago but didn't have the heavy ring removed this time I would have the ring removed . The clutch & PP are fairly new from Ft Wayne.
Sure could save me some coin if I used this. The 59A-B came out of a 1947 truck. It is now bored .040 & L-100 cam going in my 34 roadster. Maybe !! |

Re: 59A-B flywheel
Often you can remove clutch chatter by replacing soft motor mounts with new firm ones and making them very tight.

Re: 59A-B flywheel
Bob, I'm not that familiar with 34 flywheels, but 35 to 48 will work on your 59 engine, and you can lighten them by machining off the lip. Then use a 9" C&PP. I have original c&pp's rebuilt by Fort Wayne rather than using the ones carried by many of today's suppliers that are made in China. Fort Wayne will also beafup your pp with better/heavier springs.

Re: 59A-B flywheel
I have a 52 merc flywheel but was told it would not work too good. Something about depth & a sometimes stuck starter. Definitely don't want that. Down side on all this is I need to remove the flywheel from the car now as I would like to button the bottom up & get the oil pan on. I was hoping for a quick engine swap. Today I am going to see a friend & hope he has a 59A flywheel to speed things up a bit. I never have had a lot of patience.

Re: 59A-B flywheel
It still should be balanced. You recieved the correct information on 8ba flywheels not working on a 59a engine.

Re: 59A-B flywheel
JSeery I believe it is balanced as I questioned the machine shop & Ft Wayne & both stated that their work is balanced. It is presently in the roadster now & working just great.
The tranny doesn't even slip out of 2nd . I think the tranny may not be original to the car tho as it does seem to go pretty good now but the little 21 stud is kinda having some oil burning problems in #5 & compression done a bit. I had this 59 engine so had the machine shop do its' thing. They just bored enough(.040) to clean the cylinders up. The pistons, valves, guides,Johnson adj tappets, melling oil pump & all the bearings are new. The cam has been ground to L-100 specs & parkerized. The block has been squared & line checked, was within specs. Hopefully I can get the dual 97 carbs tuned in. Should be a good running sounding exhaust with twin porters. |
