The lower column gasket(s) come as a set and the number/thickness of the gaskets control the load on the bearings.

Sounds like you may be missing some pieces on the upper column, there is a cone that fits around the steering shaft and is pressed into the bearing by a spring.

Might want to study up on how the steering box and column work and the components, the assembly determines a lot of how it functions.

I am not promoting MACs, but here are their part numbers. A leak at the bottom of the column can also be from the joint between the tube and the lower plate.

LMC seems to have good prices. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/FA/full.aspx?Page=40

The base part number for the clamp is 3507, but don't see a source right off. May have to look for used.

Great resources. I forgot one other issue. How is the bottom plate w/tube plugged up? Or is the box filled up to a certain point and the hole acts as a vent??

The second, it remains open. The lube is filled to below the tube opening. Corn Head Grease (John Deere) is a good steering box lube.
