Default Can anyone in the Seattle area come help me trouble shoot my pickup

Got a 31 pickup that I can not get running for the life of me. I think it's timing. Buy not sure where I am going wrong. Been over it a dozen times. Most I've gotten is about 10 seconds of running. If anyone in the Seattle area wanted to stop by and help me that would be super awesome. Thanks Matt

If it will run for 10 seconds, I doubt, very much, that timing is your problem. Most electrical problems are fuel related and vise versa. Check for sticking needle. Try another condenser

If it starts and runs for 10 seconds you should look elsewhere.

I should say it's barely running and backfiring.

Backfiring USUALLY is a symptom of a timing disorder. Do you have the plug wires hooked up to proper sequence for timely delivery of spark. Definitely will backfire is not correct.
Other reasons for backfire are numerous, like valves clearance not right; running out of fuel in cylinders; intermittent spark delivery ; faulty condenser; distributor not set correctly, and on.....
Make a list and check each one off as you proceed to analyze.

Sounds like timing could be the issue. I had dramas a while back and the backfires from the car sounded like WW3. It turned out to be a faulty (from new) rotor button. It had virtually no lug on the inside to engage the slot in the cam. As a result, it turned on the shaft as it saw fit. Timing was all over the place. It took a while to find but when I found it, I had a grin a mile wide - gotya, you B@$t@rd!

Could you possibly post a couple photos of your engine compartment from the passenger's side? This will tell us what is and what isn't present. That alone could provide suggestions about what to check. For example, one or two in-line filters between the sediment bowl and the carburetor will send up red flags for fuel delivery problems. Or a rat's nest of ad hoc wiring can also indicate where the problem lies. 'Might save the guys from going off on wild goose chases.

Take a quick peek inside the distributor to see if the flexible wire is frayed or shorting out.

Sputtering and backfiring could be a manifold leak or other vacuum leak. Check carb gasket. Grasping at straws here.
