Default Max width tire tread on stock wheel rim?

Have a '35 Tudor with stock rims and want to go larger in tire O.D. & tire tread width. Pretty sure it's no prob on a larger OD but want to know if I can go wider on stock rim & how much wider?

tire makers usually recommend tread width should be within 1" of rim width.
