Default 1940 ashtray schooling needed

Could someone explain these 2 different 1940 passenger ashtray designs? One of mine has the drop-down(?) door with the knob at the top of the door and 2 others have the door going up into/behind the dash with the knob at the bottom of the door. Early,late....standard, deluxe. Thank you.

Pics attached.

I have heard the story that the early 40's standard and deluxe had the push in and up trays and their were complaints that when used the door lids were getting scratched when they go up and down. So they made a change to the pull out style later?

Yes, an early/late issue not a V8(std)/deluxe issue. Kube can inform us when the change happened.

In late December, 1939, the "new" design was approved. Most likely, and from my limited experience, the "new" design began to show up sometime in January, 1940.
