Default Lacquer vs Enamel test...

How would one determine the difference of OLD paint, say 80 years old, in determining if in fact it is either Lacquer or Enamel.

Thanks.

Ummmm 80 years ago was lacquer because that was the only paint that would dry hard enough and fast enough to keep up with the assembly line. I was told this years ago and read it in Beverly ??'s book on Mr. Ford.

Ford lacquered the bodies and enameled the black parts. lacquer thinner will soften lacquer paint.

Skip is right if the paint is 80 years old, but it paint in the 70s it could be single stage enamel, were you going to paint over the old paint ??? If so you can paint over lackquer with enamel, but not enamel with lacquer, in either case use a sealer then it does not matter which it is hope this help any al
