1947 ford sedan door handle spring?
Does anyone know the MAC's part number for the spring that solves the outside door handle droop problem for 47 tudor? They list a red and a blue.
Wanted to order all the parts before teardown began. Thanks. |

Here's a link to an Ebay page that might help.

Hey Topchop, what's up buddy?
I have my MACS catalog open, and I don't see any kind of spring for outside door handles. Just new handles. Mine need replaced too. The new handles are only like $26 each.. Kevin |

Hello Everyone,
My vote is to refurb the old ones if at all possible. My DNA says fix it and put it back on. Sorry to those of other feelings. -VT/JeffH |

Re: 1947 ford sedan door handle spring?
Droop in the door handle is not caused by a poor spring, it us usually caused by worn door latch parts or the wear in the handle shaft edges. You can easily check the condition of the door latch spring by opening the door and pushing on the latch plunger with your thumb. If there is stiff resistance then the spring is fine. If there is little to no resistance then the spring is bad. Usually the handle droop is caused by excessive wear on the latch internal square drive that rocks the plunger open or by the rounded shaft of the door handle. If its the door handle wear that's easy to fix by welding up the worn portion and refitting. If the latch rocker is worn the latch must be disassembled for the repair and that is a task, easier to find a new latch. Backyard mechanics way of addressing a droopy door handle is to remove it , place it in a vise and using an adjustable wrench on the shaft, twist the shaft in reverse direction of the droop so the handle is level again.

Re: 1947 ford sedan door handle spring?
I snapped a spring in the front driver side door lock for my '46 woodie. I went to an auto parts store that has been around forever and showed the counter guy the spring and he pulled out a box that was probably from the '40s that had dozens of springs in it. We matched the spring and he charged me a buck each!!! I purchased six!! Try some local guys you may luck out.

Re: 1947 ford sedan door handle spring?
After further review...I began dis-assembly. There is no magic spring.
Dick Spadaro's post #7 (above) is right on the money. The square shaft is OK, but the square socket is a little worn. Rather than looking for another latch assembly, I will either twist the square shaft to position, or maybe build a little weld on the shaft and "fit" the altered end in the worn square socket. By the way, the other springs in the mechanism are in great shape, again reference post#7 above. Thanks for your help. Just a footnote, I have done a number of chevy's in the past, and never had the support and guidance like is available here at the Barn. Stupid me. Jim |
