Remote oil filter. Help!
I am just finishing installing a ‘53 Ford 8BA in a ‘46 Mercury and I realize the motor didn’t come with an oil filter.
I thought it would be nice to install a Bob Drake spin on conversion but their website shows them out of stock. I know there are other kits avail able. Any suggestions? |

Is OUT OF STOCK BOB's kit similar to the original Ford type stock bypass system ?. If so, there are plenty of those original systems available. If that's what you are looking for you could call Ray Helgers in RI, 401 635 4849. He has plenty of them. Ray is only open Wed.- Sat. Best to call after 9AM, and before noon time. |

I am a great believer in the stock bypass systems for these cars. Unless you are a lot different than most of us on here, the car is operated under only the best conditions and is meticulously maintained. If this is the case, the original bypass filter, with it's ability to filter out finer particles than a full-flow system, is probably superior. As I have said before, when was the last time you drove your car on a dirt road?

But the spin on conversion is still a by pass system and a lot easier and cleaner to change the filter on.
I’m thinking of giving the Mercury my F1 filter and getting a spin on conversion for myself. |

I use Amsoil in some of my cars. I also became an Amsoil distributor a few years ago. How do I order that setup you have? |

I used the stock bypass filter cannister and then housed a full-flow 100% filtration system inside of it. Keep in mind that I have a specially modified oil-pump that is blocked off on the internal passages and sends 100% of the oil out the side of my oil pan, then through the filter and then to the main oil galley. My goal on the filter was to create something that would look stock, yet allow me to hide a full-flow filter inside of it. Very few folks can look at it and decipher that it is not a stock setup.

Ponder this -
If you drive less than around 1000-1500 miles a year... And you change your oil annually... Filtering your oil doesn't remove much carbon crap as little oil flows through the filter during that time. Best use VR-1 oil, altho spendy, it is better insurance than cheap oil and a filter. Not my initial thoughts but I've been convinced so by some pros. No, not that kind of pros. |

Tubman - You are certainly in the majority all around. I've been talked into removing the filter by someone with more eperience than ne. Reluctantly.
Re the test of passing oil through the filter every 11 minutes, that's interesting and totally believable. |

Abbin claims even a higher rate of filtration.
A recent test at Roadrunner Engineering demonstrated that a stock 1946 to 1953 oil filter with a .060 restrictor flows about a quart and a half of oil per minute through a clean filter under meaningful conditions of oil pressure (55psi), temperature (180F) and viscosity (15W-40). Thus under the preceding conditions, about 10% of the oil pumped by the stock pump will go through the filter and all the oil in a 5 or 6 quart system will be filtered in less than 5 minutes. Not bad and certainly worthwhile for engine life! Actual flow through the filter will differ from this estimate depending on the actual operating conditions. |

Paul, I would suggest that you put the stock filter system back on. If you're going to go "off-roading" in the desert, or other extreme uses of your vehicle, yeah, you may need some more serious filtering, but for the use that most of use have for these cars, the stock system is probably the best.
The "experts" you are referencing are probably guys whose main activity is racing. There are a lot of professional engine builders on here whose main goal is maximum performance, but for most of us, the Ford engineers probably knew best. |

I confess, I was the one who determined the 5 Qts. in 11 minutes thru the filter.
These were the conditions in which the test was done. A tube with a shutoff valve was attached to the outlet of the filter housing. With the engine at operating temp. and idle speed a measured amount of oil was timed to give the results. These results were enough to convince me not to do a 95% filter conversion.

Todays oils and additives are much better than when these cars were originally produced - you can run just about any name-brand oil and you'll be fine. While many of our engines have been ran without any filtration, it surely can't hurt to put a bypass oil filter on. You have nothing to lose (except maybe a few bucks and some time), and everything to gain.
Is it necessary or "better" to put a full-flow system on - probably not, though some of us like to have 100% of our oil filtered in case some little piece of crap wants to run through our new bearings. Glad you're putting a filter on your flatty . . . always a good idea! |

A little info on the stock filter. NAPA and WIX are the same number. NAPA drops the #5 at the beginning of the part #. I plan to run the stock filters on any Flathead I own. I just purchased a new NAPA Gold #1006 filter today..... $20.99. I know the last ones were not that much. I priced them on Rockauto and the WIX filter #51006 was only $9.73. Shipping was the same ($10.99 to my zip) if you bought one (1) or as many as four(4)...Im going to order enough for the season. I don’t know what happened to the price at my local NAPA.......Mark
