Re: elecric problem
Bend those crimps back and disassemble it. You might be able to clean or bend the contacts inside.
It might also be the dimmer switch and not the headlight switch. If it's a floor mounted one, they go bad all the time and you will have no headlights at all. Nine times out of ten it's the dimmer switch. I'd try that first before you attempt to take the switch a part. You really need a voltmeter to diagnose if it's the dimmer switch or the headlight switch so you're not guessing. |

Re: elecric problem
I always open them up and inspect. If it's burned up than it's time for an NOS or good used one but it may just need the contacts cleaned. Mercury cars are a little bit easier to find parts for than Lincoln but some parts can be very elusive. Folks that own the Lincoln tend to hoard the parts that can wear out. I don't think they are reproduced.

But removing the whole dashboard is definitely much more work. I'd be inclined to leave the dash in place, remove the seat from the car and pad the floor with blankets. Use a mid-sized LED worklight to avoid burns to your arms and head. Using a cellphone to take closeup photos under the dash may cut down on the number of contortions needed to look for tired or worn wiring. In this car ('57 Bird) to remove the dashboard I first had to remove the steering column. Disconnect the heater, wiper and fresh air controls, and all the wiring in the engine compartment. Then push the front half of the wiring harness back thru the firewall into the space under the dashboard. Pulling the dash back and out, with all the wiring attached.
