Replacing Ujoint - rubbing?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of replacing my old ujoint with a new one. New ujoint with original inner cap and outer housing. The new ujoint is rubbing against the inner cap. I've checked to ensure the joint is seated all the way in on the end of the main drive shaft. Checked the fit with the gasket in place - same issue. Any thoughts? Could the replacement part be defective?

I've attached a couple of pics for reference. New joint is on the right side of the first picture, and the left side of the second one.

That's why we quit selling new universal joints. They are not made right and they have a clearance issue. The OD of the assembled universal joint is bigger than its supposed to be. I would try to find a good original.

Thank you Don Snyder for sharing this. I wonder how many of these sold by other suppliers are floating around the hobby. Is there a way to visually identify one?

I just rebuilt my original Ujoint with a kit I purchased from Snyder's and it came out beautiful. Haven't got the car back together yet but I'm sure it will work fine!

Is there something wrong with your original U joint? It takes a lot to wear out U joint's. I have a number of used U joints and they are all pretty tight and usable. I have seen a very few that have too much slop in them, but that is rare. If you really need a different U joint, good used originals are in eBay on a regular basis.

Yes, it is obvious. The shape is that of a square, when it should be round or circular..
Looks like it could be made to work, if you ground off the corners. A lot of grinding though.

I was told by a vendor also that the splines are sometimes crooked in the repros.
NOS are available. 28-48 are the same.

Used serviceable original U-joints are usually easily found at the big swap meets here in California for $35-$45.

I think I may have run into some of those with the incorrect spline. I have had a couple I had to use a puller tool to remove the U-joint from the back of the transmission. Good idea to slide a U-joint onto the transmission spline and the drive shaft spline before you are under the car encountering the frustration.

also be aware some of the AA u joints are splined different...
