ThosD and Tom Endy are right. If you are a member of AAA, take the plates to them and ask. They can also do the transfer in most cases. They told me about handicap plates on commercial vehicles. They couldn't make that conversion so I went to the DMV, saved me $200 per year on weight fees.

The numbers on the 1930 plates I bought are currently in use on a motorcycle. I can't use them.

Jim, AAA is not contracted to do YOM plates. I’ve tried 3 times at a different location each time.

I also thought that was the case. We recently registered YOM plates for My grandson's 30 Tudor. AAA told us they could not handle it and we had to go to the DMV. The plates were registered to a car here in California. The owner was moving to Arizona and offered to sell them and he signed the proper DMV forms for the transfer. My son-in-law made numerous trips to the DMV over a period of six months and each time there was an additional fee. It was a very frustrating exercise. The plates are now properly registered and are on the car.

AAA transferred ownership of my YOM pates when I registered my Town Sedan. The only problem I had was the previous owner signed off on the Pink slip but I had to go back to have him release the plates to me. (see post #9)

This was ~8 years ago so maybe it changed?
