R side directionals stay lit no blink..left ok
Right side light up front and rear but do not blink. Left side blinks fine. I changed bulbs but same results. Cleaned contacts made sure bulbs went in correct. 12 volt system. 57 year.

Is right side dash indicator bulb lit? All 3 need to work to blink.

One bulb is burnt out, all bulbs need to be good for the flasher to get enough resistance to open and close. Did you replace any bulbs with a LED one? That would cause this to happen.

Either one bulb is burnt out, or not making a good ground, or the flasher is bad. these are the 3 things that cause this problem.

Re: R side directionals stay lit no blink..left ok
Just to rule this out if nothing else...
Double check how the turn signal fixtures on that side are mounted to the car and connected to the wiring. There may or may not be a dedicated ground wire from the signal & parking/tail light housing to the car body. Loosen or clean and re-tighten the housing mounting screws to be sure they are making a good ground connection. Or, run some temporary alligator clip ground wires from the housing to the car body. You'd think if the bulbs light up the ground connection must be good. 98% of the time you'd be right. But if a ground connection has high resistance / poor contact, various strange things can happen. This (before) photo is of a '55, your '57 may or may not be similar. Notice the headlight has it's own ground wire but the other wires for the turn/parking light fixture do not. It electrically grounds thru its mounting screws. The tail light housings do also. Last edited by dmsfrr; 06-13-2018 at 04:09 PM. |

It could be a problem in the junction block connection or it could be the turn signal switch too. If the signal stat is working on one side then it should work the other as long as all the lamp connections and bulbs are good. The wiring on all cars that are this old needs to be inspected for condition and all grounds have to be clean & functional.

I would bet on a bad ground. I have found that the socket itself where it mounts to the light housing can lose its contact. Either front or rear will cause both not to flash.

Did this just happen, or are you working on returning a dormant car to the road? If the sockets were wired wrong, or incorrect bulbs, or bulbs installed wrong so that the dim side is worked by the signals, could be possibilities. It is most probably something on that side that is requiring less amps, not enough to trigger the flasher.

I have also had to ground a particular light socket to make it work. As said use alligator clips to ground to test the socket. Good luck.

Re: R side directionals stay lit no blink..left ok
Thank you All. I worked on it today it's driving me nuts. First, where is the flasher located and is it two or three prong? Can't find flasher? Would it be in engine compartment?i didn't look yet and book doesn't say where. I found out one thing, the operator book says it takes # 1034 bulbs having 4.6 CP. the 1157 bulbs have 24 cp? So I found one 1034 and one 1157 on the side that doesn't flash. Tomorrow I will look on good side and see what bulbs it has. Might this cause a draw problem ? And not blink. I'm not too savvy on electronics but getting better.i think. I will try the ground effect idea definitely tomorrow. Living alone now I have to split my time up for. Arious duties. In house and yard. Thks again guys I really appreciate it a lot john

Try moving the left side bulbs to the right side.

Re: R side directionals stay lit no blink..left ok
The two post signal stat or can type flasher unit is generally a bi-metallic switch that works on the heat generated by the current flow to the signal lights. If current flow is low such as one bulb doesn't function then it may not have enough flow to get the bi-metal hot. If you add more bulbs to the system such as a trailer or higher wattage bulbs then the flash rate will get faster as the current draw increases.
The 3-terminal can type generally has a heater coil to operate the bi-metallic switch so it needs a ground. This type will work even if one bulb goes bad. Last edited by rotorwrench; 06-08-2018 at 12:15 PM. |

Turn the switch to the side that works and follow the click.

Jumped the stop light two wires no stop lights came on but have power at two wires.??? Cleaned all connections. Now going to see if wires are connected right at junction box ear radiator where all light wires are.
