Default muffler?

hi, i noticed i can buy a muffler without the tail pipe. is there an advantage to doing this? also can i buy just the pipe part of the muffler that clamps to the manifold and have it welded to the old muffler? would anyone be familiar with melvins classic ford parts? they offer a muffler for $250. thanks for the help.

To save on shipping, mine came in 3 pieces: front pipe, muffler, and rear pipe. Without doing it that way, shipping to Alaska was going to cost more than the whole thing.

I had a few manifold pipes made a few years back. Any muffler shop can make them. They came in handy when you needed a pipe off the manifold to test run a motor.

250$ PLUS shipping is an awful lot of money for just a muffler IMO, PLUS having a shop adapt the inlet and outlet pipes to it.
Ck out an Aries muffler. FWIW

I had some pipes made up and welded them to a straight through (no baffles) fiberglass packed muffler . The glass pack muffler without baffles is WAY less expensive and should decrease back pressure . The glass pack is actually quieter than the original style muffler . I use and prefer a completely gutted original style muffler . The gutted muffler is slightly louder than original style but will have less backpressure .

I am building an off road car, to be used like an atv so I may make a gutted muffler as I have an old one. Didn't know if anyone had done it before, thanks!

I carefully removed the end cones from the center section of the tapered muffler . The end cones slip on over the tapered shell . I was careful to only cut through the outer welds and not all the way through the tapered shell of the muffler . Reason being , when the end cones are slipped over the center section it holds them in place and makes welding the parts together easier . The lower priced original appearance mufflers have large baffles with small , maybe 1/4 inch holes drilled around the outer circumference of the baffles . This type setup causes very restriced flow . Restricted exhaust flow causes more heat , back pressure and restricted performance .

Wow, building or modifying a muffler is over my head and in the end I just want it to work. Looked into the Aries muffler and I'll probably buy it. Also apparently there is a lot more to installing a successful muffler than I thought. Looks like I'm going to have to loose the float a motor mounts. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Thanks Ken For the mention of the gutted muffler . Thats a sharp wody . The old cheapo mufflers have held up well for me . The only ones that failed was when my daughter backed the tail pipe in to a low stump and destroyed the muffler .

Larger diameter pipes will also help flow . The tail pipe on the cheapo muffler is pretty small .
