Default Battery hold down

Took nut off battery hold down frame, it was tight (vise grips) so checked nut size at local hardware, almost but not quite fit the 3/8x24 stud, so bought 2 and tried to install, but they are tight. Is that the correct size or do I need to re tap the studs to clean out the threads

I don't know the correct thread size, but it sounds like the threads is corroded. I would hit it with PB Blaster then clean it with a wire wheel. If you don't have a thread pitch gauge, take a 3/8-24 bolt, hold it against the stud and see if the treads match.
