Model A vs early 32 axle shafts
Gathering parts for the rebuild and am wondering what to look for in the inspection of the axle shafts. I am reading the info by tom Endy as well.
Also, is their a difference in the shafts of the A compared to the early 32 ? |

Re: Model A vs early 32 axle shafts
The best way to inspect the axle shafts is with a magna flux machine designed for that purpose. You want to find any cracks that are starting to form. Once a crack starts it will grow until there is a failure. They are usually found on the inboard end of the keyway. The most common cause of the cracks is the axle nut not being tight enough. The Green Bible says axle shaft B 4235 fits 28 to 32 so you should be ok.

Also look at the area where the little seal rides. If worn, just shim under the seal to space it out a little. The seal faces outward to keep grease from flowing into the housing when lubing the wheel bearing. Not a critical area.

At vintage vehicle swap meets and/or on ebay; beware of beautifully "Painted" axles which totally hides the cracks. A later application of paint remover on "Painted" axles will make a Model A owner either laugh or cry. Last edited by H. L. Chauvin; 09-14-2017 at 10:53 AM. Reason: typo |
