Default Oddball transmission 73-7006-1 60 h.p.

First a big thanks to Mac Van Pelt for all the information available on his website and in his early Ford transmission book that just solved a puzzling transmission I found locally. This is a 1937 Ford 60 h.p. transmission with a twist. After looking it over something didn't seem right, the rear bearing retainer/trans. mount looked too shallow to be on this transmission. After opening it up and counting the cluster gear which didn't match a 60 h.p. cluster I was really perplexed. What to do? Check Mac VP's site and book to solve my questions. This was a special 60 h.p. case that was made to use standard car/commercial gear sets. Like a normal 78 series case,as I understand it, a later gear set could be installed so you in theory could use this behind your hopped up 60 h.p. engine with a double detent tower as well. My questions are is there a market for this, anybody looking for these? and what's the value of one of these? The gear set although earlier looks very nice as well. The last photo also shows a rib the full length on the case bottom like pics I've seen of 78 series truck transmissions. Thanks, GaryU.

Cluster gear is 29-24-17-15. Main drive gear 14 teeth, special low ratio.

This is a early V8 60 Commercial transmission. Notice 6 bolt top shift tower and extended starter area. These used 85 HP gears. Hope this helps. Ray

Thanks ray bee, something that I overlooked. Normal 60 hp trans top is 4 bolt. This has a 68 series top, single detent.

Ford made those transmissions for the 1937-39 Commercial vehicles with the V8-60 engine. It’s basically a unique case that fits to the 60hp motor but contains the 85hp gears. The particular gear set you have is the 14/29 low ratio type, which was well suited to the 60hp engine, but would not be desirable for most 85hp vehicles. The good news is that you can swap in the 16/28 gears easily. The rear mount is the regular 1937-41 type for the 85hp vehicles.

Just brought this up again to share the disassembly time. 30 minutes max. This was the easiest early Ford transmission to date (only 5 so far) so had to share. The case and gears were all well lubed inside, no crud to deal with, no corrosion and the case had already been drained. Gears look like new, little to no wear but not the most desirable. Last picture shows something than other transmissions I've seen, thrust washers for both front and rear of cluster gear in addition to the normal rear thrust washer for the cluster. Listing them in the Swap Section if anyone has any interest. Case also available, will be cleaning it up this weekend, if no responses will be on that auction site after. Pics show gears, remember LOW ratio. Thanks, Gary
