Default Bad Blood, 1930 Colonial Motor Company Model A.

Introducing my 1930 Colonial cab model A.

Just before Christmas, 2010, i spyed this funny looking model A outside a nieghbours home.
I dragged my mate down for a look, and took the camera.

I catch up with the owner a few weeks later, and he says its for sale. The price is right, so i buy my very first model A.
Back in 1930, importing cars into New Zealand was expensive, so several car makers would import them as "knock downs", basically, everything but the body.
Then local coach builders would build the bodies. It gave them employment, and made car ownership cheaper.
The Colonial motor Company in New Zealand, not only built bodies for Ford, but also other brands.

Heres how this pick up looked when the guy i brought it off, found it.
It had been tidied up in the early 70s, used for a while, featured in a local movie, (more on that coming) and then sold and parked up.
The nicer pic was how it looked in the 70s, and how it appeared in the movie, "Bad Blood".

Same story here from Norway. We also had many commercial chassis furnished with locally built cabs, and you always see a couple of them at "A" meetings over here. Hopefully the owners can upload some pics.

It is hard to see the pictures on my computer but the door seems much bigger, tthat would be a blessing. Is the cab any bigger so that a 6 footer can actually be driving in some comfort? Jack

Where do you fellas in NZ and Norway purchase your parts? Do you have Model A parts suppliers in your country or do you have to order from suppy houses in the US?

Just curious..

This is how it looks at the moment.
Im going to marine varnish the wood work, and make a feature out of it. Im looking at painting it gloss black, and will build another flat deck for the back, like it used to be.

Bobpo,

We have a couple of vendors stocking A parts here in Norway. Then we have also got a very active MARC chapter. Anyway, the selection of parts is limited, so I buy most of my parts directly from the US on internet. Everything in Norway is very expensive, so you usually save money buying directly from US vendors. Also, I go a lot to the US on business travel, so I usually go home with my suitcase filled with A parts.

Those New Zealand 'Colonial Cab' commercial chassis bodies were actually made by Standard Motor Bodies' in Wellington. SMB was owned by Colonial Motor Co. who imported & distributed Fords before 1936. They did not build Ford car bodies, as they had no equipment like Ford Factory jigs or electric welding gear like Ford Australia etc. Minor assembly only.
Other small commercial body builders also made cabs & decks for Ford Commercial chassis. But the most popular commercial Model A in NZ was the 'open cab' pickup supplied by Ford of Canada.
Was that truck at CHCH swapmeet?? Good luck; lots of work there!

jeffM,
are those wood cabs ?

my '29 looks similar to yellow pepsi mechanic's up until the hinge , of course my windshield is not so tall as pepsi and my piano hinges are full length four foot tall.
the worms had their way with this body, one stick remains. one riddled stick.
i'm debating a design, no points.
and that film, did i read it's a horror film?
where's my popcorn ?

In England far more commercial vehicles were built with the "chassis cowl" .I suppose was cheaper than buying one with the steel cab . If you remove the body you will find it is a modified roadster cowl even has the slots to take the roadster door hinges also the "reveal" that the vertical front end of the roadster door would shut into .This meant that the wood body front edge had to be fitted over the reveal also the pressed steel cowl cap which runs over the gas tank top. This was just cosmetic to avoid the step in the cowl sides being visible. The down side is that the rear portion of this panel gets rotted out under the wood across the lower windscreen area. This is a pain as these panels are virtually unobtainable so love the one you have got !!! When the indented cowl came out a purpose made cowl was made it had no reveal and no hinge holes. Ford plant at Dagenham built A and AA commercial vehicles into 1936 all of these had that late cowl.

Hey no problem Jeff ... Our cab is a little more square -- Our door frame is square at the top .. the one in your picture is curved ... the windshield is also not as high ... More streamlined ... maybe it can go a km. or 2 faster than ours

Yes, its a wood framed cab, although the roof and doors are steel.
The movie is a true story, but its kinda horrible, just not in a horror movie way.

Our is clad in steel as well except for the roof .. It may have been in the day but I am not sure --- We have a fabric top over the wood instead . Our cabs ar unique I must say -- not too many around --- Luckly ours was stored for many many years indoors

The curved door top was one thing i didnt like when i first purchased the truck, but its slowly growing on me.
It may go a km or 2 faster, but only down a hill, with a tail wind.

Lol. I wondered about that. I cant remember when we changed, but im nearly 45, and started life in miles an hour, then it got changed, and sometimes i still think in miles. Still think in horse power terms, and sometimes find it hard when the young guys talk about kws.

Its just after midnight here, and i had the cash im owed dropped off tonight, so im off to bed, safe in the knollage that the money ive been waiting on, destined for the truck is in my wallet. Tomorrow i will be ringing Derek, (quickchange) and ordering some parts. Woo Hoo!

I believe they had a fabric top as our 28 did also. Our 28 also had large wood spoke wheels and a two speed auxiliary transmission behind the three speed main one.

Our wire wheels are the original and she also has the same three speed with a dual high secondary behind .. Ours is an early 28 with left hand emergency brake lever ( uses all 4 service brakes as the emergency )

Good morning sir.....or what ever time it is up your way. Almost 11am Monday, its raining, and ive been a very busy chap since i got up around 7am.
Got parts ordered, inspected new second hand rear backing plates that were dropped off last night, and been checking out car sites for the last hour.
Time to crank up the fire, make a hot coffee, and read some more.
Hope your weekends gone well and your looking forward to a great week.

Time for an overdue update.
I've taken the windshield out, got a new terminal box to go with the wiring, got given some Rimu timber for the pieces in cab frame that need replacing, as well as using it for running boards.
I also started the bodywork, which was going well untill i discovered this....

I got all excited as this maybe could tell me some of the trucks history. I had gone to far with the strip disc when i realised, so i can't get all of this sign, but i havent started the drivers side yet, so that will be where i get it all. Just have to work through the half dozen top coats slowly.

So after my initall excitment, and getting the pics on the computer, looking at them showed evidence of another sign under the first.

So now i've got two mysterys instead.

Yep, you're due for a new shaft and impellor. I'd order them installed together, as the last impellor I tried to press on the new shaft shattered.

Heres the drivers side door, with first sign uncovered.

Primer pic.

I have been on the phone to Librays, Musems and local area car club people.
These pics were sent from a Librarain, and i've cleaned them up in photobucket, best i could.
The first is of a 1921 Ford truck, and the second is some trucks at the Golden Bay Dairy factory in the 30s. Unfortanatly, my Model A isn't in there.

Ive been talking to a guy up in Takaka, who has sent me some old pics of the Pohara store. Still cant track the Pohara Traders part of the signage though.
Heres another pic of how the truck was found, and the ones ive been sent of the store.

Another pic of the store. If you look close at the last two photos, you can see they are the same building, and this one im posting is a later pic of same building.

Today i decided to start work on freeing up and getting the banger going.
I drained the oil, which was just like doing a regular oil change. After years of sitting, the oil was sludge free, and flowed out real nice. I was expecting it to be thick and ugly.
No real dramas, just had to shoot out and borrow a thin wall half inch socket for the rear 2 sump bolts, and one turned out to be 7/16.
Once i had sump off, i got a wee surprise.

Then i took the water inlet off side of block, and found mice or something had dragged leaves and stuff into the water system.

I cleaned that out, then got happy with the wire wheel.

It feels great to finally be getting into the engine.

JeffM When you rebuild the WP,drill a 1/8" hole thru impeller & shaft & put in a roll pin.I knew of one that didnt do that & when he revved the engine, the fan was pulled into the new rad & ruined it.

Thanks for the tip columbiA.
I finally got the engine unsiezed. Im still working on freeing up number 1 and 4 better, but 2 and 3 are perfect. I got some paint on that ol banger, and have brought new coil, radiator mounting kit, valve springs and removal tool, as well as a little bling with a nice shiny gauge panel.

A few more new items, and a pic of one of the caps, or rather the bearing.

The bottom end of the engine is likely in good shape, but I would deglaze the cyls & put in new rings. Also lap the valves as well.

Well the old truck may belong to a new owner, but that dosent stop me keeping an eye on it.
Its getting striped, blasted, painted, and put back together by a guy in his early twenties. Hes planning on keeping it stock, but hes also looking at building a Model A coupe hot rod.
Heres some pics i took of it today.

A few years on, and the new owner has started a new business, so he decided to sell. I asked if he would give the new owner my details, so I can update thread. Just waiting to hear from him.
I had trouble logging in, as its been some time, but I finally remember my log in details.
So hopefully the new owner gets in touch and I can keep this thread updated as to the next step in this ol Fords life.

Wow Jeff, we often complain here about knowing the outcome of a project or what is the latest. YOU, my friend have brought one out of the mothballs to let us know! How cool! Thank you!!
