Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
How rare is rare? This super rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster is presently advertised for sale on Australian eBay. It is possibly the only one still in existence. Ford Australia offered Roadsters in both Standard and Deluxe for 1938. While you hardly ever see a 1938 Ford Deluxe Roadster any more, the chances of seeing a 1938 Ford Standard Roadster are even more remote.
Check out the picture from the original Ford Australia Sales Brochure showing the 1938 Ford Standard Roadster which proves that Ford Australia did indeed make such a car. It is just a pity that earlier owners of this car didn't take better care of it by storing it undercover. As you can see from the photos, this car requires a full extensive restoration. Had better care been taken of it earlier on, that would have saved a lot of hard work and expense, making it that much more valuable today. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Just for a comparison, here is the page advertising the 1938 Ford Deluxe Roadster from the Australian 1938 Ford Sales Brochure. The photos of this 1938 Ford Deluxe Roadster were taken many years ago in Sydney. It is a long time since I have seen any 1938 Ford V8 Roadsters.

First pics look like 37, second like 38, did Ford carry over the grille look during those years?

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Hi 34PHAE, That was very good observation on your part picking up the different mounting points for the Wipers. I didn't pick this up until you mentioned it. I just had a look at the original Sales Brochure, and the Wipers are shown mounted on the cowl on the Deluxe model, but there are no Wipers shown at all on the Standard model. All very unusual. Thanks for pointing this out.

I see, a friend of mine has a 38 Deluxe Fordor and I'm so used to seeing the "bird beak" style grille.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
I really, really like '38 Standards in almost any body style but I sure don't see many around. I passed up a chance on a solid '38 standard Tudor a few years ago and I've been kicking myself ever since. Oh well, snooze and you lose.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Top irons on the one for sale are interesting...looks like the front part of top can be tucked back into the center so front seat is open, rear covered as in many British cars...?

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
This brings up another question for me. I was always under the impression that Ford's last true roadster (i.e. side curtains as opposed to roll-up side glass) was built in '36 or perhaps '37. Yet these photos list the standard and deluxe models as roadsters and they clearly show provisions for side curtains. Am I mistaken on this or was the roadster still available in the Australian market?

Not only the points you make but have you ever seen a true roadster with a back seat, not as a rumble seat?

Welcome to the wide world of Ford outside of the U.S. where it has been producing automobiles since 1904. Many are unique to the countries where they are sold and were not available in the U.S. or Canada.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
In reply to sidevalve8ba's question, Ford Australia continued producing Roadsters for both 1939 and 1940, as illustrated in the Original Sales brochures of the day. These models got the side wind wings to help protect the driver.
The bodies used on these 1939 and 1940 models were carryover 1938 bodies and never had the Rumble Seat, as they had a back seat. Unfortunately in Australia, 1940 was the last year that Ford offered a variety of body styles. This was the last year an open car was offered and the last year a Two Door Model was offered, even thought it was not a proper Tudor but a Sloper. For 1941, all we got was the Four Door Sedan and a Ute. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
The 38 Standard pictured doesn't look like it has provisions for side curtains for the doors or quarter windows and obviously NO glass for the doors and quaters??? I assume the 39 and 40 Roadster's in Aussie form didn't have glass either??? Any confirmation on that???? Or pictures with side curtains affixed???

If you look closely at the bottom center picture of the standard,, you will see two sockets for posts in the door top and snap fasteners along the reveal line

Just for the comparison, here are the pictures of the 1939 and 1940 Ford Convertibles from the same Sale Brochure. You will notice that the Roof is completely different to the Roadsters.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
At the moment, all I have on the 1940 Australian Fords is a Scanned copy of the original Sales Brochures on my Computer that was sent to me by a friend. As you can appreciate, these old Brochure on Australian Early Ford v8's are very hard to come by, however, with the help of friends, we are trying to build up a Library of these old brochures with the idea of making them available to enthusiasts. To date, we have managed to track down and Scan quite a lot of these early Brochures, but are still looking for more to fill in the gaps in the collection. At this stage, the 1940 Ford Brochure is not up there, as we are waiting for a better copy to Scan. However, there are lots of other models like the 1937, 1938 and 1939 that have already been posted. These Brochures are then posted to the Old Car Manual Website that is based in Canada. Each brochure has been faithfully copied and is available for all to see. You can check out what is listed by country. Naturally, the USA leads the way with the number of brochures downloaded in the thousands. Then there is Canada and Australia and the cars that were unique to these countries. As Australia has such a small population, the number of new car brochures printed is much less than the other countries, therefore, they are much harder to come by. If anybody reading this Post has a Brochure that is not listed, I am sure that they Web Master would love for you to Scan it and send it in. In the meantime, check out the following Link. You will be amazed at how many interesting, rare brochures are listed there for all to share.

Someone was asking for pictures of the Australian 1939 and 1940 Ford Slopers.
Here they are, the Standard and Deluxe for both years, 1939 and 1940. Enjoy. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
At A$22,000 this car is way overpriced for the condition that it is in, so as expected, it did not sell & has been relisted for the same price.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Fordors mentioned that the LA Roadsters Club didn't recognise any Roadster that had fixed Windscreen Posts. In Australia, check out these Australian Chevrolet Roadsters from 1936, 37, 38 & 39. While the later models had Quarter Windows in the Doors, they did not have windup windows & were classified as Roadsters. I know that this Forum is for Fords Products, but just couldn't help adding these pictures from the oppositions lineup. They don't come anywhere near the Fords in the Looks & Performance departments.
As for me, I will stick to my old Fords. Please don't shoot me for posting these pictures from the opposition! |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Old Col, is it possible that your restoration utilizes a U.S. DeLuxe cowl? I ask because Mercman states that the brochure shows no wipers at all on the Standard Roadster. ...Then again, cowl wipers could be unique to the Roadster Ute?

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Hi Alan, no,they're all the same. The brochures are artists renderings, not always absolutely accurate and tend towards making the cars look disproportionate. The Roadster that's here on Ebay has likely had aftermarket electric motors installed above the screen , possibly done when there were no replacement originals available ( like now)
PS,sorry about the giant pics.....what am I doing wrong there? |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Blacknred asked about the Australian 1938 Ford Roadster Utilities. Both the Coupe Utes & Roadster Utes were only made as Standard models in 1938 & are very rare indeed. A lucky restorer bought this 1938 Ford Roadster Ute body at a recent Swap Meet. Notice the hole for the Cowl Mounted Wipers. By the way, Ford Australia offered the Coupe Utes in both Standard & Deluxe models for 1939 & 1940 only. All other years they were only offered as Standard models.

At this point in time ANY Ute is very unusual/rare and equally very hard to get parts for. As in our 1935, we have been collecting parts sine the late 80's and still have gotten everything we need. Thanks to Trevor for most of everything we needed but still cannot find right hand drive engine splash tins!!!!! Any help Old Col or Oz Man would greatly be appreciated. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
BLACKANDRED mentioned the 1937 Ford Roadster Utes. This is another example of a very rare old Ford from Ford Australia. Here are some pictures of a survivor that I found on the Internet. I have only ever seen one of these 1937 Ford Roadster Utes in the flesh & that would be over 30 years ago. Whether it is a Roadster or a Roadster Ute, they are very thin on the ground & not many have survived the passing of time.

G'Day Rockfla,
RHD '35 splash pans are thin on the ground over here.I had to swap a SBC to get a set . The poor sole, it was my gain, and his loss. Our English and South Africian friends may be of help. On reading your profile reminded me about the firewall tool box that we spoke about do you still want one ? |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Just located a photo of another 1938 Australian Ford Roadster, this time, a Deluxe model. Notice how Ford Australia used the same carry over body of the 1937 Ford Club Coupes as this comparison photo shows. The rear shots are of a pair of Club Coupes, a 1937 Ford Deluxe and a 1938 Ford Deluxe. All Coupes by Ford Australia in 1937 and 1938 were Club Coupes. We even got a 1938 Ford Standard Club Coupe. No Ford in Australia featured a Rumble Seat after 1936. This same open car body was used up to and including the 1940 model Roadster and Convertible.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Going through some old photos and came across this 1938 Ford Standard Club Coupe. All Coupes sold in Australia were Club Coupes. Ford Australia offered them as Standard or Deluxe. In the sixties and seventies, this is how you could find them. I hope that it was rescued? This Standard Club Coupe is like the Standard Roadster at the beginning of this Post, both body styles are unique to Australia.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Just my opinion, but I always thought Ford got it wrong in the 38. What we know as the 38 DLX should have been the standard! Don't get mad at me, all of you 38 Dlx owners. I like em all! I just prefer the standard front end over the DLX.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Hi Mart, Maybe I shouldn't have added this picture as it is an American car, not Australian. Ford Australia never ever sold any Tudor Models after the 1929 Model A. It was such a good old photo showing the upgraded Stainless Steel Trim that I just had to share this picture. I know that many USA Mail Delivery Vehicles are Right Hand Drive, but this one wasn't.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Mart, out in more rural areas of America it is common for USPS delivery persons to use their personal car and they will drive as is shown in the photo. LHD, driver on right. I suppose once one gets used to it it feels natural.
In more populated areas with "curb side" delivery they previously employed Jeep DJ-5 delivery vehicles that were built RHD, and those have been replaced by RHD Grumman small trucks that have a van like appearance. Sorry, I know it's not Ford related, but thought I would add the info anyway.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
I was once testing a jaguar XK sports car, RHD in the USA. I stopped at a gas station and as I walked back to the car a young kid asked "Are you a mail man?". Obviously the mail men must be well paid around the PHX area.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Fordors, Regarding the picture of the 1938 Ford Standard Tudor Sedan, you mentioned that it was not uncommon to see drivers sitting on the Right in a LHD Car. From this position, you could reach the Steering, but how about the Pedals? Was an extra set on the Right? When I was in Shipshewana, Indiana a few years ago, I saw a Dodge Voyager being used to deliver Mail and the driver was on the right in this LHD vehicle. It really looked strange seeing the driver on the opposite side to the steering wheel. In instances like this, are there another set of pedals Dual Control while leaving the Steering Wheel on the Left?
I know this is not Ford related, but it would be interesting to know the details. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
mercman, you pose an interesting question, but I'm afraid I don't have an answer. With late model automatic transmission cars it would certainly be easier than that stick shift Ford. Any rural area mail persons out there to answer this for us?

This is a picture of the RHD Grumman that Fordors was talking about. As Fordors asked, is there anyone out there that can explain how people were able to drive a LHD vehicle sitting on the Left?

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
There is actually another person in that Tudor. I'm surprised no one remembers the job creation program for PORES (people of reduced stature). Early '37 thru '38 money was provided to rural USPS branches. A segment of dash was removed and a reduced height rad fitted. The slatted grille actually allowed reasonable vision. Unfortunately a dramatic rise in serious accidents involving USPS vehicles drew the program to an early close.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
My grandfather was a rural mail carrier in East Texas for a lot of years. The rural carriers, at least at that time, had to provide their own cars. He drove Model A's for as long as he could find a decent used one because they were so narrow. He could sit behind the wheel and lean over to put the mail in the boxes on the right hand side of the car.
Later on when automatic transmissions became more prevalent he switched to them and drove from the right hand side while delivering. I still see rural mail carriers doing this today.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Went to a Swap Meet on the weekend, and this 1938 Ford Standard Coupe Ute was for sale for $8000. There are not many good Utes left in Australia. Until recently, they were unloved and many were used as "parts cars" for other body styles. It is only recently that Utes have become sought after. This old girl has had a very hard life and needs a lot of help to bring it back to good condition. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
We were there too, pity we didn't catch up! It was a sad old Ute, seemed to have a lot of '40 stuff fitted to it . Did it sell? We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of early V8 parts on offer , doesn't happen down here anymore.....we brought back a truckload of stuff including a '40 Std. Ute. Back next year so we'll have to meet up,cheers.....

Hi Mile, This is as good as I can do. This is the Page from the Original Sales Brochure. As you can appreciate, these cars are extremely rare and I would not know where to start looking for one. I believe that one has been make into a Street Rod, but that is about the only one that I have heard of. I have never seen one in real life. They are extremely rare. Regards Mercman <>< |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
It is a 1940 & was added as Mike said that a 40 Roadster would be cool. These are so rare, this is the only picture that I could find to prove that Australia did in fact build a Roadster in 1940.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
If the previous custonions had of taken good care of this rare car, instead of storing it out in the open, it would have been snached up quickly by enthusiasts. Unfortunately, it seems that the car is now very rusty, and may even require a replacement frame. It is a car worth saving, but the expense would be huge.

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
The Swap Meet that the 1938 Ford Standard Ute pictured above was the Annual Toowoomba Swap in Queensland. By the way, the only years that Ford Australia offered a Deluxe Ford Ute were 1939 and 1940.

That is a great lookin' car! I always thought Ford styling ended it's summit in 1936, but I'd have one of these in a heartbeat!

That 1938 Ford Standard Roadster ex Argentina is coming along nicely. From this Post, it is obvious that the 1938 Ford Standard Roadsters were not unique to Australia as originally thought? |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Meanwhile, progress on this Australian 1938 Ford Standard Roadster is coming along nicely. These photos were taken late last year. The owner is missing the small chrome piece that fits on the grille below the piece that has the Hole for the Crank Handle. He has this piece, but is missing the small chrome piece that fits below this. He is also missing the chrome surround around the Radio Grille. Can anyone on Ford Barn help him out? |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Thanks u guys for the compliments...Have to admit though its still is probably the case mine is a fake, well its a real club but the reason its a roadster is the doors were in such horrible shape paper thin after being de rusted and stress cracked all over the top, I decided to firm them up I caped the top and roadster ed it.The original fenders were different from what Iv ever seen, they appeared to be hand made and shaped out of a series small pieces shaped and gas welded to gather, nice work though,,the rears are the originals and the fronts are US ford stamped. Its was originally a delux

So, in the end, it appears that Australia is the only country that offered a genuine 1938 Ford Standard Roadster.

This is what the Genuine 1938 Ford Standard Roadster looked like a few years ago. Compare it with how it looked late last year and see the transformation. It won't be long before it is looking better than new. Keep watching. |

Purists will be happy to note that the new owner restoring this car has re-positioned the Windscreen Wipers to their correct location on the Cowl. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
CAF, Even our 1938 Ford Deluxe Roadsters had that extra opening to eliminate blind spots. Ford Australia never offered the Convertible until 1939, and the same body was carried over into 1940, and that was the last time Ford in Australia offered various body styles. From 1941, all that was available was the 4 door Sedan, and a Coupe Ute, plus a Panel Van (that is what we called your Sedan Delivery) until 1948, and this one disappeared, just leaving the Sedan and Ute until 1958. |

Illustration of the Australian 1940 Ford Deluxe Roadster from the original Sales Brochure. You can see that it also has similar roof treatment. Yes, this 1940 Ford is a Roadster, not a Convertible. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
While we are on topic of 1938 Ford Standard models, here is another model that is unique to Australia. The 1938 Ford Standard Club Coupe. In the USA, the Club Coupe body style was only available as a Deluxe model, but in Australia, we got a choice of Standard or Deluxe. This one is wearing after market Headlight Rims to accommodate Sealed Beam Headlights. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
This is the only other Australian 1938 Ford Deluxe Club Coupe that I know of. It's Body Number 65, while the Maroon one shown earlier is Body Number 49. From these figures, I don't believe that many have survived. As for Roadster Numbers, this one that prompted this Thread is the only one that I have ever seen. Unfortunately, for the Roadsters, it appears that Body Numbers for the Roadsters are not separated between the Standard and Deluxe models. These Body Numbers are separated on the other body styles, but not for the Roadsters, strange. |

Re: Rare 1938 Ford Standard Roadster
Late to the party here but the '38 Std roadster was originally from Coffs Harbour area in NSW which is where the shed photos are from. It started out around $30k in Unique Cars magazine and the price steadily dropped. Last I saw it was in Victoria but still for sale by the Coffs owner's family so it's good to see it is being restored.
