Hi,
Do those motors have hit or miss ignition. Saw about 4 at a show last year. The owner had them all running and it was sure neat. Every now and then one would pop as the RPMs dropped. Once the big flywheel got moving it took a while for it to slow down enough for the ignition to kick in. With a load, I bet they sound great. Al K.

the little maroon one is a hit and miss it is a 2 hp Alamo and the other is a 3 hp Fairbanks Morris it is throttle governed

I went to pick up a 9 inch ford center section and came home with a fairbanks morse 1 1/2 horse hit and miss. It runs but needs a new gas tank . Tim

Brendan,I recently met a young fellow of 81 who has a 20 hp like those.He said he has owned over 200 or more of those rigs. He lives near Walt Dupont in Gardiner,Maine A real Prince of a guy,his name fits him well!

Nice engines. I used to help a friend of my Dad's who had several traction engines. Gotta love old iron!

I love those things! Always wanted one, but time, money and space won't allow it. There's a big one up on a mountain top near me that used to run an entire observatory on DC, back in the teens and twenties. It's still in perfect running order. When they fire it up for fun, you can feel the vibration through the bedrock.

They are still used to run oil wells in some locations. I remember one in North Dakota when I was younger. You could hear it thumping away on a still summer night.

I haven't had this engine out in awhile. So , I went out and took a couple of pics. I was wrong. It's a 2 HP not a 1 1/2 HP.

Very neat! I've seen these engines running at various shows. Can anyone tell me how a "hit and miss" ignition works?

Thanks for sharing this with us. I enjoy hearing them run. Am I correct in remembering that some engines of this type were started on gas and then switched to kerosene after it warmed up? Thanks, Tom
