All I know for sure is that today, $3K or even $5K doesn't get you too far into a collectible or antique car of course depending on body style, etc.

Just buy the car. Any advice you get here just ain't worth a dime. So my less than a dime's worth of advice is, buy it. If you find one later that's a better deal buy that one too. After you have a few in the garage you will be much better at deciding what's a good deal and what isn't. I've never let the fact that the car I'm buying isn't worth what I'm paying for it interfere with my enjoyment of the purchase.
