Default 49 Mercury Trunk lid problems

The trunk on my 49 Mercury rarely stays up. My initial thought is that the springs Are weak and need to be replaced. Does anyone have a recommendation on how best to remove and install new springs? Or is there some other aspects of the trunk springs or hinges I should be examining? Thanks!

The alignment geometry of the hinge brackets can affect the ability to keep the trunk open. Not saying your springs are good, but the brackets can be canted in/ out, as well as up and down. Just be careful how much you adjust it because it's a can of worms. And you will end up with a sore back. Don't ask me how I know...
