Default Help! 32 Cab: Mounting rumble lid cushion to deck lid

I'm trying to figure out if I'm missing some brackets or something??? I surely don't know what is supposed to be there and something just doesn't jive for me. I have DavidG's books - but a dang friend borrowed them (figures), so I can't consult the 32 bible.

Top Slots: To describe the problem, have two rectangular slots at the top - the top of the rumble cushion springs has two metal tabs that slide into them. WHAT keeps them from sliding right back out (as they are doing - so the cushion flops around). I'm not sure the correct bend/angle for the tabs as well. How do I keep these "snapped into" the slots?

Bottom: There are two little tabs that are welded to the springs on the bottom, with about a 3/16 hole in each. The last owner of my cab just drilled and screwed these into the decklid - I can't see that as being correct.

Missing Bottom Brackets and/or Hardware?: My bet is that there are supposed to be two other brackets or something that mounts on the bottom of the deck lid - that the cushion then bolts too?

THANKS in advance . . . I want to get this correct and put my rumble seat back together.

On the bottom there should be "D" nuts that are pressed into the inner panel. They would have a 12-24 or 1/4-20 thread. The screws go through the tabs and screw into the D nuts. If you don't have the D nuts you can drill some holes in the inner panel and install threadserts for the screws

It appears that you are missing the pair of clinch ('D') nuts that fit into the indentations near the bottom of the rumble lid shown in your second photo. The two tabs at the bottom of the cushion assembly attach to the lid with screws into the (missing) nuts after the top tabs are inserted to the slots at the top and the whole cushion is then securely held into place on the rumble lid.

That the clinch nuts are missing is not unusual as they are obviously under a fair amount of stress given the weight of a rumble seat back cushion. It was not an inspired design.

Thanks guys! Is it possible that somebody BENT the top tabs on the spring?? Given the angle they are currently at, I don't see how they can really hold - given the slots at the top. I took a picture of the current bends and approximate angle . . . would love it if David or somebody could tell me what they should look like - as it is highly likely that somebody screwed around with the top and possibly the bottom to get this mounted or re-mounted at one point in it's long life.

When I slide the tops in, the bottom tabs do not seem terribly close, nor deep enough to go into those indentations and reach the holes in them. This makes me ponder if things have been bent or moved around a bit.

I'm away from my car stuff so I cannot provide dimensions or tracings, but the photo below is of an original '32 cabriolet rumble seat back rest cushion (obviously not the upholstery) and it would appear that both the top and bottom tabs differ in profile from those in your photos. (If you want to be able to enlarge the photo for a close up, please send me a PM with your e-mail address. The photo has fairly high resolution and enlarges well.)

It turns out that perhaps its resolution is too high as I was unable to upload it here. So, please try the PM/e-mail route.
