Default Control Valve Partial Rebuild in Car?

Thought my Steering Box needed adjustment but the "slop" appears to be in the area of the stud at the Control Valve.

Is it possible to rebuild this area w/o removing assembly?
Rebuild kit has new stud, two cups and a spring.

56 Ford.

I've done it on a couple of manual steering cars, so I'm thinking it's doable since all you need to do is separate the ball stud from the drag link, unscrew the plug and replace the guts and stud. Early power steering was basically a hydraulic system superimposed on a manual system and not all that much different from a manual system. You'll need a ball joint separator for the stud and a screwdriver big enough to unscrew the plug. There are screwdriver sockets for ratchet wrenches. I got mine at Horror Fright IIRC. Be sure to torque the nut on the new stud to spec.

I've been told (???) there is a screw & spring at the outer end of the control valve assembly that adjusts the left / right play of the ball stud where it fits into the control valve.

It appears I may have to remove the Assy. There is a center shaft with a nut on one end that needs to be removed in order to separate the control valve sleeve. This sleeve holds the stud, cups and spring.
Book reads to check mesh at steering box, or check the stop screw....to check this screw the parts have to be separated. Boomar.

I did mine under a 63 after the control valve fell off the ball stud. Worn out from never being greased. At the time Ford had a kit with all the pieces. It wasn't fun laying in the dirt in the winter, but that's where the wrecker put it.

I am pretty sure from memory that the power and standard kits are different(ball and spring).make sure you have a drip pan for when you undo the lines otherwise it will get messy.

Does it also have a drag link like non-PS cars? Those can have considerable slop in them too.

When removing the control valve from my 55, I found a pin the needed to come out. I used a vice grip and a small hammer. If I remember right, the valve needed a certain number of revs when reinstalling, then put the pin back in. Read to book, get it right.
