Re: 34 smoking starter switch from the newbie.
Also, given that this switch is one big contact switch - always push down on it hard with your foot . . . you want it to have a good solid contact. Once you inspect the contacts and potentially rework or replace the switch, don't be afraid to push down on it with some force - such that the contacts mate as they should.
If you choose to take it apart, you'll probably find that the contacts are pitted and worn a bit - usually it will take some sanding/filing and other cleanup work to get them in a good usable condition. You can always post pictures of what you find once you get it apart - to get some opinions on how to proceed. |

If you're lucky the copper plates are just pitted and not broken like this switch I took apart ---> junk

Re: 34 smoking starter switch from the newbie.
I got it started!
One of the cables was a little loose on the switch- I think it was touching the other cable. I tightened it up and gave it a try- I went ahead and ordered a new switch just to have one, a switch pushrod and some grommets to replace the rotted foam ones I found in my exploration. Thanks for making my day everyone. I’m still going to try to clean up what I have. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Is the cardboard divider on some of these switches there to protect from cable arc? |

That could be fixed but the effort maybe more involved then getting a new one, certianly since they are available. It's a very simple switch. But you never know what is wrong till you open it up. |

Hard to tell by the photo, but did the shaft extension on the switch rub through the insulation on the starter cable?
