'40 Ford, gas shocks
I found a pair of new old Monroe gas shocks that will fit the '40. I have heard that gas shocks do not work well on the older leaf sprung cars. Any experiences to share on that ? Thank you Foirdbarners.

Re: '40 Ford, gas shocks
got them on my 40 wagon, have been working good for about 20 years. yes sometimes with the new shock they are just too stiff and will rattle your teeth. PS we use front shocks off a chevy van from the 70's

Re: '40 Ford, gas shocks
I have had gas shocks on the front and rear of my '40 forever.....after I rebuilt the suspension it rides and handles better than new. I used the conversion kit and shocks made for a '48.

Re: '40 Ford, gas shocks
I fabricated my own front mounts. The bottom is a bung welded into the wishbone for a standard shock mount stud, and the top is a set of F1 mounts on a fabricated plate that bolts to the frame. This gives me a slight angle from the top to the bottom, which although it may diminish the shocks performance a small amount, the handling should be better. I can post a photo of the bottom mount, but the top will not be complete until I settle in on a shock. Right now the Monroe 5851 shock looks like it may work. Will report later.

Re: '40 Ford, gas shocks
I've got them on the front and rear of my 40 coupe with radial tires and the ride and handling is far better than it was with stock equipment.
I made the front shock brackets and used Drakes gas shock and sway bar kit on the rear. |
