I was reading the earlier posts on type of oil to use in the transmission based on incompatability with the bronze/brass material. (140wt GL-4/5). Iv'e never really paid attention to the 90-140 wt oil I have used in the past and have never had any problems, then again I don't put on many miles either. Has anyone ever had a failure due to the wrong type of oil in their transmission? (abusing your transmission and blaming the oil doesn't count!)

There has been endless discussion about the stuff that attacks brass...I eventually found an article on it. probably from a link here, that sounded pretty authoritative in its source and stated that the problems began at something like 350-400 degrees. I decided to quit worrying about this.

Actually, I forget, but I'm going to get on with the necessary worrying about the phase-out of leaded gasoline. Folks, once they finish phasing out the lead, our valves are all going to fail immediately, and by 1980 we won't have any old Ford left!

I bought one of the Tremec T3550 five speeds when they came out. I used ATF in it. After a few years, it developed a whine when backing down in second. I called the fellow who sold me the trans, the first thing he asked was what oil was in it. I told him, he said get it out and put in GM Sychromesh oil. I did, no more noise. Magic oil, but at 11 bucks a quart it should be.

Also, don't forget to worry about the reduced zinc additive in new oils. It still has a lot more than oil fo the '30's and 40's, maybe even '50's, had, but suddenly it's a problem! Just think about all the flatheads and Model A's, etc. that ran for years with re-refined and/or non-detergent oil! Think that stuff had any zinc additive in it? Nope!
