Exclamation Timing gear problem

Be careful of Melling cam/crank timing gear set. My engine builder got a miss marked cam gear and the stamped alignment dot was a tooth off. Be sure to check a new cam gear to your old fiber one to confirm correct alignment. My builder assumed he had a good part, NOT ! Engine ran, lousy ! He is in the process of a partial tear down to install a "good" cam gear. Crazy! mike

Building engines here for a living and knowing many other engine builders personally you would ALWAYS check the cam degree when doing the final assembly or before, during a mock-up period when laying it all out.

This is something most shops always check, at this point makes absolutely no difference where the marks might be on any of the gears, it will show up as "wrong"!

Takes about 15/20 minutes to establish the correct cam position!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. More recently on the Flatheads we devised a simple method to "move' the cam around, very similar to the SB and BB Chevy's using a "pill". Here's a shot of a finished piece.

I agree, the builder should've checked, the point is : the part is stamped wrong! Just more junk...wheel bearings, carb rebuild kits, etc....poor quality & high $. mike

A picture of the gear would also be helpful.

Another thing you have to check is: cam bearing clearance. This can be done with a snap gauge, much better than a caliper.

Appears to be an eccentric, presumably the bolt holes in the cam gear are slotted a bit.

Hi Ross, correct the holes in the "pills" for the cam pins are offset to allow the cam to be advanced or retarded as needed.

It's necessary to "slot" the cam bolt holes (they are actually just drilled o'size for a bit more room) to help move the cam without the bolts interfering!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. Here's a shot of an assortment of "pills" showing the least amount of offset, this is a 0* pill, to the most, this would be an 8* one. We don't always install the offset pills but if the customer wants to have it ready just in case we set it up for them. It's very easy moving the cam with the pills in play, most times you don't need to remove the cam gear, just slide the pill out!
