Default install of worm gear on steering shaft

i am searching for an answer and found this information on the installation.
old posts. this is what i found.
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showt...t=52663&page=2

my question is about a different direction.
i was thinking of threading the ends of a solid steel rod then run it all the way through the steering shaft. nut the top end and drag the worm onto the shaft with a nut, spacer and washer on the bottom end. has anyone tried something like this?

with out advice on taking it to a machine shop.

thanks for your thoughts

My first reaction t that idea is that the threaded top of the steering shaft where the nut holding the steering wheel goes on is quite delicate and some of those worms take a lot of force to push on. I think there is too higher danger of damaging that thread.
It is a 7 tooth or 2 tooth steering box? The above applies to both but they are different.

I've read of threading the inside of the steering shaft and using that to pull the worm on, 5/8" NF, IIRC.
I've put them on by putting a piece of aluminum plate on a concrete floor, starting the worm on the shaft by hand and the slamming the worm/shaft against the aluminum repeatadly until the worm is fully on.
HTH.

i don't think it would work on the 28 , 7 tooth shaft, the shaft protrudes past the end of the worm gear 1 1/2" or so.
in the old thread from the forum someone threaded the nd of the shaft and used a stud to pull the worm on. i have an old junk shaft that i may see if i can make that work.

thanks

I made up a collet that clamps onto the shaft ,and another part that the collet slips into on a taper, then slip the collet up until its just under the worm and press it on, I doubt if you can press on the worm any other way with out bending or damaging the shaft .let me know if you want picks as I have the tool out to do a worm on a 30 model .

Do you want to rent that great tool out? I am sure there will be a long line. I need to press the '37 worm gear on to a '36 shaft. I have been told a press will bend the shaft. I have been told that welding a thick flat washer on the shaft might work. I have also thought about inserting the shaft into a black iron pipe, but your tool looks perfect.

Steve, I,m in Australia, but I,m sure your local machine shop could knock one up
you dont want to weld onto the shaft, the tool grips the shaft just below the worm, so the shaft doesn't see any force.

Mine is different than pictured above but I can easily see $250-$300 for a machine shop to fabricate one.

Why not reach out to Steve Becker and get him to change it for you on your shaft?

I use a axle knocker screwed on the steering wheel end and a hammer. Just like putting a head on a hammer. Does take heavy gloves, hold the shaft off the ground when tapping.

Collets work very well but are more complicated and time consuming than fabricating a simple bolt on clamp. I've seen two bolt style bolt on clamps that work well enough to remove or install about any Gemmer worm gear. Another key component is a piloted press rod to aid in pushing the steering shaft out of an old worm gear. There are several good threads about worm tools here on the model A side and over on the early V8 side.

Ill be in this situation soon, great thread! I noticed Mikes, and I think Snyders advertise that service. Has anyone used them to do the worm gear install before?

to remove mine im going to use a thin cutoff wheel on the little grinder. carefully. i'll cut 99% of the way through longitudinally 2 cuts 180 deg from each other then split it with a chisel. i did a practice one on a garbage shaft, worked good, no stress on the shaft.
