Lock Washers or no??
If a bolt gets a cotter pin is there ever a lock washer also...for instance the u-bolts on front spring perch...drilled for cotter pins but mine had lock washers...and nuts will not tighten down far enough to get cotter pins in...

Re: Lock Washers or no??
Lock washers and a nut and a castle nut & cotter pin both captivate the nut so it won't back off. I suspect that at some point who ever worked on the front end had a lock nut but not a cotter pin. At least he had the sense to use one. You don't need both I tend to use what was originally intended for the item being worked on. Tim

Re: Lock Washers or no??
There is no need for a washer behind a castellated nut. None were ever used as far as I am aware.

Re: Lock Washers or no??
the 4 large rear engine mount bolts require both a locknut and safety wire. See Restoration and Judging stds, engine section. While not cotter pins, Ford did think that using one form of locking fasteners did not always obviate the other.

Re: Lock Washers or no??
How would a judge see the four bolts that are safety wired under the flywheel?

Re: Lock Washers or no??
Lock washer is useless on the original Ford nuts used for the front and rear spring.
They are very hard, a file hardly leaves a mark, so the lock washer can not do its job. The lock washer can not dig in and hold. |

Re: Lock Washers or no??
They also make use of Loctite. Loctite is actually more secure than a Lockwasher.

Re: Lock Washers or no??
I use them sometimes with castle nuts to get the cotter key holes to line up. Flat washers also. But I don't put my cars up for judging.

Haven't you heard of the new Xray program that will be utilized on all Blue Ribbon cars judged, starting this summer?

Re: Lock Washers or no??
I don't have a picture, but it would be a figure 8 with the wire going through the holes in such a way that if the bolt tried to unscrew it would pull the wire tighter.

Re: Lock Washers or no??
Just wondering Mr. Lopez, did you install the anti squeak shim at the top of the spring pack or the slippery shims between the leaves? Both are going to make the spring assy. thicker. Those items are not needed.

Re: Lock Washers or no??
Do a google search - you will find some data that show lock washers actually make things easier to undo!!! ( and of course, perversley, some data that shows that they do work!)
