6V electric fuel pump suggestions

What brand and where should I buy a 6V fuel pump for my 46 wagon. Any suggestions for type of pump and mounting. Topic probably addressed a hundred times on here but want advice. Thank you!

Airtex E8902 pump (6V - low pressure). Usually can find on Amazon for around $30. Mount near the gas tank.

There are previous threads with a lot of discussion on mounting, wiring, etc for a fuel pump if you are interested in detailed information. The basics are as low and close to the fuel tank as practical. I would wire it using a relay. A relay would be wired to an always hot source for the input. Add a new fuse between the power source and the relay. I would not wire into the ignition switch, but if you do only use it for a relay trigger input. Need to decide if it is going to be electric fuel pump only or plumbed through the original fuel pump. And if you are going to run it full time or only to prime or for vapor lock. If you use a toggle switch you need a method (light or something) to let you know it is turned on! Very common to forget the electric pump is running.

No you should not. Talk to charlieNy and stop using eth fuel. Even the last pumps from macs have been working for 8yrs (fingers crossed)

You can wire it without a relay. Relays are just a good method.

I agree with JSeery
Use of a relay is smart & takes the load off the ignition switch, if you are using it to turn on the pump.
Seems like I remember a pump made by "Autopulse" when we were kids

Nobody seems to remember one of the most important things to use with an electric fuel pump.
AN INERTIAL CUTOFF SWITCH!!!!!!!

You can get them at any junk yard for a couple bucks.
It could save your car from becoming a crispy critter.

think ol' henry, had a post on putting a aftermarket inertia switches, in case of a accident for full time electric full pumps. god forbid.

First, an inertia switch is a device that is wired in series with the plus wire going to the fuel pump. If the switch which is mounted to the car in a protected place, receives a hard impact or the car rolls over, it will disconnect the circuit it is wired in. It needs to be reset manually.

I use both an oil pressure switch and an inertia switch.

Not sure if there is a tech post on installing either. I use only a mech pump, so I guess a oil pressure switch isn't a bad idea. Might be a bit of overkill for me as I'm just running a stocker warmed 60 over.


Granted; I inner city drove a Model A with a tank in the dash for a time too. Couldn't do anything about that.

An oil pressure switch shuts off an electric fuel pump if the engine is not running. With a mechinical pump you would need an intera switch along with a fuel line shutoff relay.

If you keep the original mechanical pump and run the electric pump through the original pump, if the diaphragm fails you could pump the entire gas tank contents into the oil pan!

Excellent advice by JSeery, if you are involved in a crash you want your electric fuel pump to stop pumping gas. Wiring people such as Ron Francis Wiring have these switches. Also, the July/August, 1999, issue of the V-8 Times has an article about using an oil pressure switch as a cutoff. When the engine stops, the oil pressure drops, and the pump stops.The article has all the info you need, including part numbers and wiring diagrams.

Got mine here. Good pump with low pressure no regulator needed and unaffected by modern fuels.
