I wonder if he is asking how much it is worth because he is considering buying it? I am sure if it was for sale he would have put it in the for sale section.

Black bumpers, incorrect body colors, lack of pinstripe, maybe missing radiator emblem, roadster top supports, and replacement ignition cable call into question what else was done incorrectly in the "total restoration six years ago." Lacking photos of the undercarriage, interior, dash panel, and right side of the engine compartment, as well as any knowledge of whether the engine was rebuilt and by whom, I would put the value at about $9000 in Portland.

Nice driver in Michigan would be in the 10K range. Jazzy color, but not factory available back in the day.

It's about a ten grand car, a driver that will stay as it is, to buy it with the idea of correcting all the flaws would be a bad investment. Bob

I don't see the indented fire wall for the gas shut off. I thought all 31's had that.

The early 31 cars didn't have the indented firewall. I think that the indented firewall started around may 31. It may have been a little earlier but that gives an idea of about when the indented firewall started. I don't think that the question is whether its a perfect show car, but what price that it may bring. It looks good for a driver. The hot rod guys would probably pay the most as the body would be desireable. I figure that the seller will ask at least twelve thousand or more. Coupes are still fairly plentiful and eight to ten thousand is probably about what it would bring, It would cost more to duplicate it but model A people are mostly tight.

I recently purchased one in the Detroit area for $8000 and it was an older correct restoration with new Goodyears and paint. So in my opinion he should be happy with $8000 !

looks like they tried painting it bronson yellow and seal brown. Not right for a coupe, but they are model a colors. Ill agree with 10,000-11,000 if it runs and drives well. Its a presentable car, just not 100% correct. looks like a good car for someone who just wants to get in one and have fun with it.

Now that you mention that, if you can picture the wheels painted orange, it would look a lot better, not "correct" for the correct people but a lot better. Bob

I went to an auction in Southwest Michigan recently and the car attached in the photo went for $25,000!! Way over what I thought it would go for. Guess a car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. This owner was in our local club and had passed away in 1999. Car was driven maybe 5 times since then.

I agree 100% !!! Yellow wheels and whitewalls is just too much light color in one place. Orange or red wheels would set the whitewalls off much better. Not knocking, just a thought.

I don't think so. I think that most would prefer the gas cut off valve under the tank rather than under the hood . Its a pain having to raise the hood most times when the engine is shut off.

The coupes are hot sellers, I missed two on craigslist recently. One was 8k other was 9k gone within an hour of posting. Hopefully they are high enough in price that they dont end up like this coupe. Shame to start with such a gorgeous car.

Roadster top supports are what some call grab handles on the tops of the quarter panels. These were standard equipment on roadsters to support the top when it was let down. These parts are often installed on coupes with rumble seats as grab handles. Yhe VIN is on the frame, under the body and splash apron on the drivers side near the rear motor mount block. The body will usually need to be removed to confirm the number.

Joe,

When you bought the car did someone point to a number that matched the paperwork? They used to use engine numbers but the DMV's are getting away from that. There may be a tag installed by the DMV on the door jam.

Roadster top supports, which are frequently called grab handles because they is what they are often used for, support the roadster top and keep it off of the paint when the top is folded down. They are not "correct" as something that came from the factory on a coupe but frequently installed to be used as grab handles when getting in and out off the rumble seat.

Roadster top rests over trunk/rumble area are indeed necessary for resting the roadsters top, while it is laid down.
As has been said previously, they are not correct nor original to the coupe with a rumble seat. Also as has been said earlier, when they are used, it is as a 'dress up' enrichment. However, as a practical matter, they are a 'pain in the butt' (or more accurately - the ankle) and act as a hindrance and safety risk when anyone over twenty-five tries to act young and climb into the awkward-accessing 'Rumble Seat'

That not withstanding, I see a lot of potentially 'nice' features on this car, which indicates that the restorer built it for functional driving in today's fast and crowded streets and highways. And who know what other improvement features have been added that we do not see.

But to answer the original post - how much is it worth ?
My grandfather bought one new in '31, for about $500. So, I figure that this one (with 80+ years of depreciation) ought to go for about $100.

Of course, some would argue that depreciation is more than countered with the U.S. Dollar's INFLATION ! And then too, some would argue that 'improvements' also raise the price : 'C' engine, Mitchel transmission and Over-Drive, electronic ignition, Stromberg Carb. with down-draft manifold, exhaust headers, Aries s/s muffler, Flat-head Ted brakes, water/oil gauges, Roll-down rear window, etc., etc. And then there is "paint jobs", and then there are paint jobs; Ford metal (fenders, etc.) verses after-market.

I went for the 'real deal' (all of the above + side-mounted spares, trunk behind Rumble Seat, etc.) - basically a 'Show Car' that had been retro-fitted for touring. It looks like the photo (Ford Maroon) that Jerry Kzoo posted above. I paid $18,000 for mine. So depending on 'what is under the hood' and how she drives, I would join the majority of other who posted here previously and say $10,000 - $12,000 should be in the 'ball park' for this yellow coupe. Of course, the answer may lay somewhere between the $10,000 at the low end, and $18,000 at the high end. It depends on 'what is under the hood' and how she drives - and how much of the car was put together with Henry Ford parts and how much was not. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but not necessarily a thousand dollars. It takes much more than a photo to tell the whole story. That being said, it sure 'looks' like it ought to be worth $10,000, maybe more.

The use of the term VIN did not come out until the fifties but prior to that they generally used the engine number or for some makes a serial number on a plate or a number stamped into the frame for a vehicle identification number. The Model A used the engine number. If you changed the engine you were supposed to notify the DMV. They did not use body numbers. The body numbers were only assigned to bodies that were not built by Ford and I believe your body style was built by Ford. Ask the seller to show you the body number that matches the title and sees what he does. Do not do anything with the car that involves investing money until the paperwork is straightened out. The owner was right about the number being on the frame (you have to lift the body to see it). This number should match the original engine serial number unless it has been replaced.

$14K,
Indented firewalls came out in June 31. The changed was occasioned by the breaking of the welds and rivets that held the steering column flange to the bottom of the tank, and then leaked gas. The complete change included the valve mounted on the recess in the firewall which was designed to take the fuel directly out of the tank into the fuel line, side bowl strainer on the carburetor (see your 31 Owners Handbook) , a new steering column support arm that fastened to the stronger cross bar above the gas tank. The service bulletins contain the note for the update kit and I believe instructions for modifying an earlier gas tank installation and finally, the safer fuel system (and that is relative) does not add any value to the car unless one wants the perceived security of not being doused with dripping gasoline from a leaking tank.

That stamp could show up anywhere, could have been ground off on a previous repaint or even buried in the primer coat. I didn't notice mine until I striped the paint.

I have a friend who recently listed his 29-30 (not sure) pick-up for sale a got $24,000.
Driven quite often and looked great. Buyer was from down South, my friend lives up North. So it goes back to being worth whatever a buyer wants to pay. I also know a lady who has an immaculate 30 sedan with a trunk and she wants $18,000. A local guy is seriously considering that one.

Well $18,000.00 Immaculate ? He Should Buy It , If He Don't It Might Be Because He Wants A Coupe, The Coupe Is More Desirable , Thats My Thinking, But What Do I Know , I'm New To This 31 Car Stuff .

What Did You Think Of The Fire Wall Insalator I Found ??

You DONT have the indented firewall. Compare where your fuel line comes through the firewall with the one that BobC posted. Your fuel line shutoff should be on the inside, not under the hood. Nice car, enjoy.

I think that firewall blanket is one of the best things you can do for a coupe. The difference in heat and noise is night and day with and without it.A layer of thin insulation under the floor mat makes a big difference too.You do NOT have an indented firewall.

I have never seen a fan like that on a Model A with an original engine. To me it would look terrible. If it overheats you should fix what is wrong, a properly running Model A won't overheat. In case I haven't talked you out of it yet the stock generator probably wouldn't support the extra load from the fan. If you add an alternator to support the fan that you shouldn't need in the first place you will probably but too much of a load on the water pump bearing leading to problems with the water pump. I also do not like the look of an alternator on a Model A.

While we are on the topic of cooling systems you might replace the 4 blade fan (it is actual part number 46-8600 from a 1933-34 four cylinder Ford but was the dealer replacement for 1928-34 four cylinder Fords) with a current aluminum reproduction fan. Buy it new from a reputable supplier as some of the older ones had problems. The original steel 2 blade Model A fan tends to fail slinging a blade into whatever gets in the way. The four blade like you have is better but there have been a few reports of them losing blades. Check yours to be sure there not any cracks starting to form and if there are not put it on your to do list.

A agree with Charlie, the fan is just one more thing to go wrong, one more electrical load that is not needed and the fan, if original, should be replaced before something happens.

That Was A Great Write Up On The Over Heating & The Fan Blade.
The 6Volt Elec Fan I Was Going To Get Was Just A Precaution, I Don't Have Over Heating Problems, Thank GOD

So It No For Me On The Add On 6 Volt Elec Fan.

But I Will Check The Blade For Cracks, Thank You For All The Good Info
How Many Blades Does The New part number 46-8600 Have ???

Harley03joe

Charlie I Found This At Macs

Model A Ford Fan - 6 Blade - Modern Plastic With Steel Hub - Replacement Type - FORD
This has the correct taper on the hub for proper fit. It bolts to the hub using four bolts. An improvement in cooling flow. An ideal choice for the "touring" Model A.

This has a 13-3/4" diameter.
FORD MODEL A 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931
USA made.

Due to clearance issues, this will not work on a Model B ( 1932-34 ) water pump.

The new part number fan that was used from 1933-34 and as a dealer replacement 1928-34 had 4 blades like the one you show in your Post #33. The original Model A fan had two blades and was made by wrapping and welding sheet metal to form the blades. Between rust where the metal for the blades overlaps and fatigue the original fans are prone to fail at the worst time and in the worst way. A slightly improved version was released in late 1931 and carried through 1932. The final version (46-8600) was released for the 1933 Model Year and stocked as a replacement for the earlier cars. Failures of the 46-8600 have been reported (I had one fail ). The current aluminum fan has the same appearance as the original fan unless you look closely. A lot of people, myself included, think the two Model A Clubs (MAFCA and MARC) should accept these aluminum fans for Blue Ribbon judging as a safety issue. As I mentioned earlier be sure to get a new one from a reputable supplier as some of the early ones had problems. I think they come with black powder coat but I saw one on a dressed up engine that looked great after a polish. Just for the record, I don't like the look of the plastic fans (such as you show in Post #67).
