Default 49 Merc Icon Derelict

Maybe some of you know about the "icon derelict" line of vehicles. Maintaining a derelict appearance but a totally "built" chassis and drive train underneath. The latest is a 49 Merc. Something totally unexpected under the hood. Hint: its not a flathead. https://autoweek.com/article/sema-sh...QdShIvFcsp0hYk

Unique way to ruin a beautiful car. Had a '49 Merc when I was in high school in 1958. I still miss it. Traded it for a '55 Cheeeby in 1960. Bad mistake. 150 - 200 miles? hope it has a bicycle rack on the back.

Well I don't consider it ruined. The way of the future....

Ruined? well was it? doing okay before the transplant?

I get the whole idea of resto-mod or the patina. been around a long long time. Just for me, not there yet.

Not a fan. But each their own. Looks like a fun car. But so does a new 2019 vette.

I think I would consider doing an electric conversion to mine but with one addition, a sound system that would replicate the dual exhaust sound that is made by the flathead V8

Agreed, I'd miss the sound of the flathead. But they say the surge of power from an electric powered car is pretty awesome to feel. For my kind of driving 150 miles would be plenty of range. And anybody that has seen my 52 Merc knows I am just fine with "patina". But I don't see an electric motor in it's future as long as I own it.

Nifty idea but not really practical due to limited mileage range.

Rear fender flares look odd.

I don't really mind the electric part, but have always hated "patina". It's just an excuse to not paint your car. After all, it does take time and money. And the added-on "gee-gws" don't help either. There is such a thing as "good taste".

Not "fender flares" but the preserved paint that was under the '51 Merc. skirts that used to be installed on it.

The patina trend came along at just the right time for me and the Merc. Before I could paint this one it needs major floor and rocker replacement. I lack the skills to do it myself and it would cost way more than the car would ever sell for to do all the work. If it was a coupe, convertible, woody wagon, etc. I'd do it but this old four door sedan's primary value is as family history to me. Its good mechanically and the view from the drivers seat over that faded and scratched hood and pitted windshield is just fine.
Now fake patina is just a little strange to me but some people like that too. Mine is all the real thing. :-)

Have to agree that talent was involved but suspect that it was a collaboration of many talented individuals, not just one "man".

Ralph, I'm sure I couldn't afford to do it either, but the owner/builder of this car really should have the resources to finish it properly.

Reminds me of when converting to propane was trendy.

Say Ralph, I haven't seen any report, lately, about your '39. How is it?

Mercury Energy a Power company here in NZ has converted a 57 retractable top to electric. Made me cringe doing this to a mint vehicle. Down here we have a government that is anti mining (oil and coal) and they have legislated against any new permits for oil exploration as well as putting a whole bunch of taxes on petrol. It was $2.38 per litre at the pump yesterday. There has been a bit of an explosion in the use of EV vehicles here most popular would be the Nissan leaf . I have a mate who has just bought one and I "give him assholes" about it. I tell him "all the more petrol for me"......got to keep the faith for the time being, but it will be the way of the future.

Remember when Diesel engines were the "wave of the future?" Oops.

The 39 showed up in my video last week during a tire changing episode in the shop. It is ok but not mobile. I think I need one of Skip's coils for it. And I damaged a rear brake shoe while pulling the drum acouple of years ago so it needs some work to even have parking brakes. Never mind the seized brake cylinders. I turn the engine over by hand every week so the valves won't stick as bad as they did a few years ago.
