Fuel Pump Valve
Hey Guys. I know I've voiced a few times, as others have, about a little frustration with mechanical fuel pumps. I pulled apart a bad one that was working well for about a 1yr. There was no flow at all. Everything looked fine except the valves.
The one on the left is the intake valve of the pump. The one on the right is the output valve which would have fuel sitting on it when not running. As you can see the material of the valve completely melted. Both were hard and brittle. I have been using 10% ethanol fuel. But am switching to non-ethanol. I would like to run the 10%. It's more convenient and less expensive. Are they making tuneup kit that are made for ethanol? |

Re: Fuel Pump Valve
Sorry, excuse my ignorance. I went online and I notice that macs and a few others sell pumps that are rated 10% ethanol.
The last ones I had were from yrs ago. I haven't looked in a while and didn't know they changed it. Macs website was the first I've seen advertised as 10% ethanol friendly. Last edited by Tinker; 07-31-2011 at 12:41 PM. |

Re: Fuel Pump Valve
Tinker, Alcohol fuel has been destroying our fuel systems for long enough now that you can get fuel friendly parts at most vendors. Just confirm. Then also, some places specialize, like Antique Auto Parts Cellar:

Re: Fuel Pump Valve
It happens when the disc inside is rubber coated.you have to find the old style of valves which have no rubber coating on them. I have a few left but not selling them separately from a pump rebuild.I have no source for them. They usta come in kits many yrs ago and im running out of them after 100's of rebuilds ive done. ken ct. sorry.

Re: Fuel Pump Valve
Not that it helps particularly, but the old ones may have used a material called Tufnol.

Re: Fuel Pump Valve
No its a phonic like material like a brown fiber board used in radio insulation. I still have plenty of the discs themselfs which go in the 32 to early 36 pumps but no way to use in pumps after early 36 which were encapsulated in a little brass houseing with a small spring. ken ct. [spelling may be phonolic ?] dont know

Re: Fuel Pump Valve
That sounds like the same stuff, Ken, Tufnol may be a UK company producing the same stuff. I checked their website, it certainly sounds like one of their products.
I was saying it in case it might be possible to source the material to produce alcohol resistant valves. Mart. |

Re: Fuel Pump Valve
The later valves after 36 were in a crimped together brass housing. NO way to replace the disc without ruining the housing. ken ct.
