Default 46 Merc Engine Questions

Came across this pic in an add on kijiji. Supposed to be in a 1946 Merc 2ton truck. I have a C69 truck engine, and I have no oil filler tube which seems to be in the pic. Also it appears a sensor of some type (coolant?) was added to one if the head bolt locations. Does that make any sense?

Wow. Would have never guessed it was a coolant heater, but the truck is being advertised in Prince Albert, SK, Canada.

Here's a better picture of the CANADIAN oil filler tube, as well as the intake manifold that the tube bolts to. DD

...and the manifold.

Head bolt heaters were common here. Dad had one on the 52 Merc. It got left out on the rebuild as my brother didn't think we would ever run it in cold weather. Far as I know the Mercury truck engine was the same as the Fords. The only difference you might see is if comparing a U.S. built engine to a Canadian.

I knew the 8BA engines had some sort of oil filler tube, but really didn't notice it on the 59A type motors. I've found a few more images on the interweeb showing the sane manifold above, but am curious as to why some had it and other didn't.

The goofy tube deal above, for the pre-'49 engines was a CANADA-only affair. Below is a pretty good representation of a US 59A type showing the oil fill at the rear. DD

Sure makes it easier to add oil, so maybe not so goofy.

Agreed have one on my C59A engine in my NZ assembled Ford CKD ex Commonwealth plant of Canada. I imagine that tube would have been pretty hand too in Cab-over Ford trucks. We still got the "USA" filler as well.

I had the same oil filler tube on the 46 Ford truck engine. All it had at the back was a vent above the fuel pump.

As per V8Coopman, I just thought one could add oil via the breather tube. I understand that it may not have been as convenient, but still possible. I found this pic of an "Aussie" engine with an even longer one. Perhaps as Graeme mentioned it was for a COE. It also has a double pulley system which I had never seen before.
