Driving Around New York City in 1928
This could be more fun than a roller coaster, and scarier than the spook house.

Yes, that is Buster and Babe. And some really nice cars, like the Pierce Arrow at the start.

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
Did you notice the driver and conductor on the tram at the 4.20 minute mark? When the tram hits the bridge pillar, the driver goes out the front and the conductor is sandwiched between the pillar and the front of the tram. OUCH!
Wonder what happened tot he horses.

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
No, he didn't.
Keaton did though. All but one in his career in the teens and 20's. He couldn't master how to do the pole vault, had to hire a real pole vaulter for the shot. He also did uncredited stunts for friends, often pissing L.B. Mayer when he was working at MGM. I'm a big BK fan, my son is named Keaton. I was really hoping that BK was going to pop up in some rare footage when I saw this clip. Still cool to see Ruth though. The last section was shot in L.A./Hollywood. They don't have palm trees in NYC. |

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
Harold Lloyd must have driven my car at some time that would explain why the steering is so sloppy and the brakes wore still in good shape... he never used them

Yes . . . In Northern New Jersey and Metro New York City, year 1928 is unofficially known now by the locals as the "Pre King Kong" era. That was when the Woolworth Building was one of or thee' tallest skyscrapers on Manhattan Island.

don't most cities now regret that they tore up, or paved over, streetcar rails?

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
St Louis is re-establishing street cars, they will have three operating in a few months and like metro-link, the street cars will expand back out from there.

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
The Twin Cities is putting in metro trains, but not the individual street cars. I can still remember riding the street cars in Rochester NY when I was 6 years old, and what a neat ride it was.
In 1968 I rode the street cars in El Paso for a dime, but I'd bet they are gone now too. |

Great look at NYC in 1928, my Dad always talked about seeing the first Model A in 1928 turning onto a street down there. Bob

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
Don't forget, the films were taken at a slower speed back then so the action looks faster than it actually was. Can't imagine a Model T like the one Lloyd was driving going that fast. Also did you notice the cop running toward the end of the film? His feet could not be moving that fast.

Amos & Andys' first FULL SOUND movie, "TAXI" was filmed in 1932, in N.Y. City.
Find it on the NET & watch it! It has a really GOOD story line, also. Bill Redeyes

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
Melbourne Australia has retained its trams, setting it apart from other cities in our country. We have even retained a small fleet of the iconic W-Class trams, built between the 1920s and the 1950s. These are in daily use and are the envy of Sydney!

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
If this country was smart, they would have kept them also. The last time I rode a streetcar was in 1968 when the Army sent me to Fort Bliss. Looking at all the buildings downtown and riding the streetcars was like going back to the 1920's or 1930's. I'd bet El Paso got rid of them by now though.

Re: Driving Around New York City in 1928
Hoogah,
GREAT pics, thanks! The "people catcher" bumpers are reminiscent of Model A bumpers! In the early '40s, in Oklahoma City, Momma & I rode Old Streetcars, back & forth to the Hospital. I still remember the UNIQUE sounds & electrical ARCING from the pulley boom! Bill Old
