Just located a photo of another 1938 Australian Ford Roadster, this time, a Deluxe model. Notice how Ford Australia used the same carry over body of the 1937 Ford Club Coupes as this comparison photo shows. The rear shots are of a pair of Club Coupes, a 1937 Ford Deluxe and a 1938 Ford Deluxe. All Coupes by Ford Australia in 1937 and 1938 were Club Coupes. We even got a 1938 Ford Standard Club Coupe. No Ford in Australia featured a Rumble Seat after 1936. This same open car body was used up to and including the 1940 model Roadster and Convertible.

Going through some old photos and came across this 1938 Ford Standard Club Coupe. All Coupes sold in Australia were Club Coupes. Ford Australia offered them as Standard or Deluxe. In the sixties and seventies, this is how you could find them. I hope that it was rescued? This Standard Club Coupe is like the Standard Roadster at the beginning of this Post, both body styles are unique to Australia.

Just my opinion, but I always thought Ford got it wrong in the 38. What we know as the 38 DLX should have been the standard! Don't get mad at me, all of you 38 Dlx owners. I like em all! I just prefer the standard front end over the DLX.

Hi felix37, the 38 Standards look particularly good after the added Stainless Steel Strips were added to the Grille and side. This extra trim really lifted them. In Australia, because of their late introduction, all 1938 Ford Standards got this upgrade of added SS Trim.

Shouldn't the mail delivery car be RHD?

Hi Mart, Maybe I shouldn't have added this picture as it is an American car, not Australian. Ford Australia never ever sold any Tudor Models after the 1929 Model A. It was such a good old photo showing the upgraded Stainless Steel Trim that I just had to share this picture. I know that many USA Mail Delivery Vehicles are Right Hand Drive, but this one wasn't.

No, no, don't apologise for posting it, I assumed it was an American mail delivery, just surprised to see it wasn't RHD.

Liking the pics you have been posting of all the Australian nuances in model.

Mart.

Mart, out in more rural areas of America it is common for USPS delivery persons to use their personal car and they will drive as is shown in the photo. LHD, driver on right. I suppose once one gets used to it it feels natural.
In more populated areas with "curb side" delivery they previously employed Jeep DJ-5 delivery vehicles that were built RHD, and those have been replaced by RHD Grumman small trucks that have a van like appearance.
Sorry, I know it's not Ford related, but thought I would add the info anyway.

I don't think you could reach the letter box in Auz unless you had a LH drive car like the picture .Ted

I was once testing a jaguar XK sports car, RHD in the USA. I stopped at a gas station and as I walked back to the car a young kid asked "Are you a mail man?". Obviously the mail men must be well paid around the PHX area.

Fordors, Regarding the picture of the 1938 Ford Standard Tudor Sedan, you mentioned that it was not uncommon to see drivers sitting on the Right in a LHD Car. From this position, you could reach the Steering, but how about the Pedals? Was an extra set on the Right? When I was in Shipshewana, Indiana a few years ago, I saw a Dodge Voyager being used to deliver Mail and the driver was on the right in this LHD vehicle. It really looked strange seeing the driver on the opposite side to the steering wheel. In instances like this, are there another set of pedals Dual Control while leaving the Steering Wheel on the Left?
I know this is not Ford related, but it would be interesting to know the details.

mercman, you pose an interesting question, but I'm afraid I don't have an answer. With late model automatic transmission cars it would certainly be easier than that stick shift Ford. Any rural area mail persons out there to answer this for us?

This is a picture of the RHD Grumman that Fordors was talking about. As Fordors asked, is there anyone out there that can explain how people were able to drive a LHD vehicle sitting on the Left?

There is actually another person in that Tudor. I'm surprised no one remembers the job creation program for PORES (people of reduced stature). Early '37 thru '38 money was provided to rural USPS branches. A segment of dash was removed and a reduced height rad fitted. The slatted grille actually allowed reasonable vision. Unfortunately a dramatic rise in serious accidents involving USPS vehicles drew the program to an early close.

My grandfather was a rural mail carrier in East Texas for a lot of years. The rural carriers, at least at that time, had to provide their own cars. He drove Model A's for as long as he could find a decent used one because they were so narrow. He could sit behind the wheel and lean over to put the mail in the boxes on the right hand side of the car.

Later on when automatic transmissions became more prevalent he switched to them and drove from the right hand side while delivering. I still see rural mail carriers doing this today.
